It Is understood that an application
for a commutation of sentence has been
sent to the department of Justice In
Washington In Iwhulf of Bass Williams,
the Atyuita youth who pleaded guilty
In December, IMIS, to (be charge of vi
olatlng the i*istal laws, Ha waa sen
tenced to serve eighteen months In the
penitentiary and is now confined In the
Federal prison In South Atlanta.
Williams itlso pleaded guilty to a
similar charge in rolumbus, Ga.. and
tha United States Judge eentenoed him
to serve two years In the penitentiary.
While there la nothing In the court
records to show that the two sentences
will be served a* the same time, It Is
said that they will be compounded, but
that tha two-year sentence may have
to be served.
He began seeing In December, 1(01,
and with the time allowed for good
conduct. It Is likely that he will be
discharged ihl» summer unless the ap
plication for commutation of sentence
receives the favorable action of Presi
dent Roosevelt.
While Williams was employed by
Bluthanthul & Blckert two years ago
he received a letter by mistake contain
ing a check on a Savannah bank. He
returned Hie check to the sender, re
questing that currency be Inclosed and
same forwarded to an address In care
of tha Piedmont Hotel. The matter
turned over to the Inspector* of
the poetofflee department Whan n
maasanger was sent to the Piedmont to
get a decoy letter that had been for
warded the Inspector! shadowed him
and when the letter was turned over
to Williams he was arrested.
The local Federal authorities refuse
to discuss the matter sa they claim
such Information can not be given out
except from the department In Wash
Ington.
