A review 01 the udtlrciss o: this gentleman, by
.1. B , from the Savannah Morning News, will be
louud iu the columns ol the Intki.i.igenckk
mu) we invite a earetul perusal ol the a&me to
our readers.
* MfVi Adam T. Holme*, D.D,
The obi ti try lio'.ice ol Dr. Holmes, deceased
winch we publish in the IsTFLLnEKCBa this
istomin /, wii k wrtttr-u by (he fiev ti <J. Horna
tiy, <>t LaGnnitc, and published in the Chris-
lian I-‘ Ur. Wc reproduce this notice solely as
an au ot j i>tice to the no mory ol one whom
we knew, and for whom wc uad the highest pet
aoual regard.
From May, 1859, to Janaary, 1859, Mr
Holmes, wile tod sou made their home with us
under our own roof, and we ha-1 the opportuni
ty ol knowing sometning ol the character ol the
deceased, from that da'e until the t'me of his
death, and can tiuly say tnal he was an honest
man and a devoted chttaUatt.
State Election.
The election commences this morning and
will continue lor three days.
We again appeal to all, without distinction
of race or c-'lor, to submit to and obey the laws
as they are, and not to molest each other in the
right to vote. This is nothing but right, and
much depends upon the manner ot holding and
conducting the election, and we trast the matin
gers will see to it that the laws and rules be
strictly adhered to, and that no one be permit
ted to disturb the peace.
CbrlRimas ana New Tear.
Our merchants should recollect that this is
the best time to advertise. There are every
day a large number ol our country friends and
visitors in Hie city, and the holidays are ap
proaching. Judicious advertising just at this
time in the Intelligencer, cannot tail to
prove a capital investment of money, and it
should be borne in mind that what is spent in
advertising ii really money placed where it is
sure to return tenfold. Try it.
The Augusta Constitution lint says :
“.Now if the p ; an marked out by Hon. B H.
Hill ih to be the course ol the 1) mocralie party,
so-cailed, we shall have nothing to do with it
We do not care the toss ot a copper between a
Chase Demociatic Administration and a tium-
ner Radical one. The contest between them
would he a contest and scramble lor nothing
but spoils. It is grateful indeed to us that a
majority ot the j"U'nai* in Georgia are at issue
with the Unu. Mr. Hitt's programme, and that
liis address lias received but cold comtort from
such quarters ’’
How could it. be otherwise than colJ comtort,
when he has gone so tar as to advise, not accep-
aiice and acquiescence in all that has been doue,
but to abandon all hope ol any change m the
tuture.
By the by, how is it with the Democratic Ex
eeutive Committee in their address. They not
only accept all that, has, been doue, but they go
so tar as to say that they would not il they
could change the political status ol the negro.
Will some of our exchanges please explain
the difference between Mr. Hill and the Com
mittee ?

An international telegraph bill was intro
duced by Ramsey, (Mtnn ) and referred. The
Canada intercourse bill was reported favorably
by the Committee of Commerce. The bill
making Jersey City a port ot entry was reported
adversely. Senator Schurz’s amnesty resolu
tion was taken up,and Sctiurz made a powerful
proiiuncuimfHto against the President and Radi
calism. Hu said “ the right ot any citizen to
vote was completely at the mercy of any vil
lain who happened to be a registration officer
while there was no remedy tor the grossest of
outrages.” In the House a bill was passed ap
propriating $300,000 for a revenue cutter. The
Amnesty b.ll was discussed. Farnsworth, (III.)
Lawrence, (O ) Wood, (N. Y ) and Cox, (N. Y.)
were the chief speakers. They were all in
lavorof general amnesty, and oljected to the
limitations in the. bill, partial measures being
injurious, and really disqualifying unobjection
able meu while encouraging the unprincipled.
The bill went over until to-day.

The Management ot the present election,
which commences to-day, will be conducted
after the following manner:
The po.ls wiil be opened in the Council
Chamber ot the City Hall, at the usual hour, and
none but the managers aud clerks will be ad
mitted. The voter will pass in at the West
door ot the chamber, which is fixed ajar so as
to admit but one man at a time, and as he ap
proaches the ballot box will directly confront
every manager, who will certainly, by thi9 ar
rangement, detect any attempt at repeating.
When the ballot has been deposited, the voter
then finds his exit by way ot the south door of
tin chamber, etc., thus avoiding all confusion
at the polls and obviating any attempt at in
timidating the voter
Tue budot-box is of itsell something novel
and unique, and a very perfect piece of work
manship. The material is walnut, about two
feet in length by one in width and depth, and
dove tailed together in a very ingenious manner
—provided well a sliding tup in which is the
usual aperature for admitting the ballot, and
which opening is provided with a slide and but
ton 11m.. ri:i*hili that will be securely closed at
the eni of each day and will preclude all pos-
? ibiiity of opening it save by unlocking the
sli ling tup and removing the tame.
t'nc election will, in all probability, so far as
lb, nruuigement is concerned, be* conducted
up ns a tuiti r and more perfect system than ever
bU >re iu the city.
Rtr.-Ait its—The attention of every good
citizen i- • ..lied to the notice of Captain
Newman, u -mother column, with reference to
strange nt’-p • who may have been imported
and me lutk.ug around the city awaiting the
election, in order to “ repeat.” Any informa
tion obtained concerning such should be com
inunicated as directed.
Bowdon Collegiate Institute.—We call
attention to the advertLtment, in another col
umu ot tins most popular school of learning,
which Is situated in one of the most healthful
sections of our State We are informed that the
Spring Session, which commences on the 18th
ot January, 1S71, will open with a lull corps ot
professors. It is the cheapest college in the
Slate to acquire a thorough iducaiion.
The Weather — Yesterday, as the past
week, was dreary and gloomy, only rather more
rain was driven into our laces witn consid
erable more I--iceby the high impetuous winds
that raged nearly all the day. At intervals
when not raining so incessantly, the low, dark
audswitt fiviug clouds would occasionally en
velop the church spires and tops ot the higher
buildings and for a while obscure them from
view. Later in the afternoon the winds chang-
< d their course and lor a tew minutes gave
promise ot a s<x>n blow off, but not many min
utes after, might have been seen the darkest and
moit threatening clouds, rapidly rising and
borne upon the winds in all the fury of a storm
and hurled through the city like a tornado
which lasted sometime.
Tue air was not so chill, coming from a due
southerly direction, hut its mournlul sighing
End the pelting rain accompanying it rendered,
it decidedly unpleasant to be out.
“ Failed to Meet.”—In consequence of the
Jnclemency of the weather list evening the City
(Council did not convene as was expected. The
•.meeting has been deferred until the next regular
meeting, Friday night.

A New and Healthful Article of Food.
The Sea Moss Farine, manufactured from Irish
Moss, by the Band Sea Moss Farine Co., has
been placed on our table at different times, and
proved to be one of the best, most nutritions and
easily digested of all the farinas now in use. Itis
palatable to the taste, is lighter and less compact
than any other farina, and hence better adapted
to weak stomachs, to dyspeptics, to invalids, and
all persons of frail constitutions. Iu cases
where tapioca, sago, barley, corn starch, mai-
zena and similar articles are beneficial, the Sea
Moss Farine is not only a substitute, but has
advantages whieh neither ot them possess, be
cause the main ingredient of the moss has been
considered by medical men for many years as
having invaluable remedial pioperties. It is
