MrssMargaret Washington Tells How to Get Rid of a Severe Cold “Lost August I took a very severe ;old and it seemed that I couldn’t break it up. I got so bad that I was confined to my bed for five weeks, doctorilig all the time without getting my relief. I had no appetite, natural ly lost flesh. In fact, I had given up .all hopes of ever getting any better. “A friend recommended Milks Emul sion and I commenced its use. When able to leave my bed I weighed 111 pounds! Now, after taking Milks Emul sion five weeks, I weigh 125 pounds, feel better than I have felt in two years, Sian eat anything, have no ef fects of the cold and work every day. I thank God and Milks Emulsion for restoring my health.” MRS. MARGA RET WASHINGTON, 1099 E. 14th St., Winston-Salem, N. C. Delightful Home of Frame and Brick Unusually Good Design This brick and frame home will just suit those who want to build this type of house and want to do it economically. It Ims straight walls, which mean low construction cost. At the same time the entrance door and the windows, together with tlie roof, make it very attractive. As will lie seen by tlie iloor plan, the home contains six rooms, there being three bedrooms and bath on tlie Second floor. By W. A. RADFORD Mr. William A. Radford will answer questions and give advice FREIO OF COST on all subjects pertaining to practical home building, for the read ers of this paper. On account of his wide experience as editor, author and manufacturer, he is, without doubt, the highest authority cn all these sub jects. Address all inquiries to William A. Radford, No. 1827 Prairie avenue, Chicago, 111., and only inclose two-eent stamp for reply. Harmonious combinations of color and materials are the aim of many home builders. Brick in itself is ex cellent building material as also is wood. Combinations of these two, however, provide a contrast that is pleasant. Shown in the illustration is a design of a home which utilizes a combina tion of brick and wood to an unusual ?ood advantage. The lower half of the house is of brick while the upper half is of frame. The brick gives a sub stantial appearance to the lower part while the frame above the brick per- I BREAK-KK* J 1 I ifiICHEN uivfil ‘o lllpi Lmng'Km. The house is 22 feet 10 inches wide by 22 feet 10 inches deep exclusive of a sun room which adds 8 feet to the Floor Colors Should Blend With the Finish Floors should be as mellow and in conspicuous in color as possible, but always in a color that harmonizes with the general finish of the room. Tiie finish of permanent flooring is highly important to the general ap pearance of the room, and the possible combination of soft and hard woods, linoleum and composition floorings is of interest to anyone who is planning a home. In general, hardwood floors are bet ter and more durable, particularly If the floor is not to be entirely covered. If the floor is to be covered with car pet, soft wood is desirable; it is also used in country houses and success fully finished with paint or stain. The hard woods include oak, maple, birch and beach, while pine, fir and red spruce come under the head of soft woods. If a linoleum floor covering is de sired, it should be laid at the time' the house is built. Many housekeepers prefer tile and composition floors for the bathroom, kitchen and service quarters, as they are waterproof and can be cleaned with soap and water as often as necessary. If hardwood floors are used, they can be finished with wax, or varnished and then waxed, and polished at regu lar intervals with a dry mop. Floors of soft woods should be oiled at in tervals. Linoleum floors should be waxed. Rugs should be in keeping with the type of room, and should in nearly all cases be darker than the walls. Large rug designs are not desirable, though small ali-over patterns are attractive in rooms with plain walls. If the walls are figured, plain rugs are in better taste. Plain rugs and carpets show dust more readily than those with all-over figures. Tiled Interiors Tiled interiors—entrance halls, liv ing rooms, sun porches, bathrooms and kitchens—have a very practical basis as well as an esthetic one. No other material is as easy to keep in spot less order as tiles, which are impervi ous not only to dirt, but also to wear, so that there need never be any ques 'ion of redecoration or repair. The dining room is 10 feet G inches by 13 feet 6 inches and at one side is a breakfast room 3 feet wide by 8 feet. The kitchen is reached through thi breakfast room. The stairs running out of the en trance hall end in a square center hail on the second floor. Opposite the stairs is the bathroom while on the other three corners are bedrooms of good size. It will he noted by an examination of the floor plans that each bedroom lias a large closet off it as also has the bathroom. The house is set on a concrete foundation and has a basement of the same dimensions as the house itself. The addition of plantings around the base of the outside walls and the awn ings at the windows give this home a very attractive appearance and one of which any owner may he proud. Stucco Needs Clean Surface for Adhesion Monolithic concrete walls should preferably be rough and of coarse texture, rather than smooth and dense, for the application of stucco. Walls of this type should be cleaned and roughened, if necessary, by hack ing, wire brushing or other means. The surface of the concrete should he brushed free from all dust, dirt and loose particles, and should he wetted to such a degree that water will not be rapidly absorbed from the plaster, but not to such a degree that water will remain standing on the sur face when the plaster is applied. Concrete block for stucco walls should be rough and of coarse texture, but not weak or friable. Block should be set with cement mortar joints, which should be raked out or cut back even with surface. Before applying the stucco the sur face should he brushed free from all dust, dirt and loose particles, and should he wetted to such a degree that water will not be rapidly ab sorbed from the plaster, but not to such a degree that water will remain standing on the surface when the plaster is applied. Where a Window Is There Should Sink Be Kitchen-experts agree that the best place for a kitchen sink is under a window. Under some circumstances, where the plan of the kitchen is un usual, the sink may he placed else where, but there should be an assur ance of good light. If the sink Is placed on the outside wall the pipes will not freeze up, as the drainage line does not go into the wall and tiie supply pipes do not have to be placed there. If they are put in the wall they may be insulated so they will not freeze. Small House Idea On account of the high cost of con struction and maintenance, it is no longer practicable to erect the huge frame residences which have lined our city streets in tiie past. The old order of eight and nine-room houses for the man of moderate means has had te give way. Composition of Fruit Is Shown Data on Ssveral Varieties Grown and Marketed in This Country. (Prepared by the United States Department of Aurlculturc.) New summary tables on the chem ical composition of fresh fruits have been issued by the United States De partment of Agriculture. Data on (57 kinds and varieties of fruits ami 31 fruit juices are included in this com pilation by Charlotte Chatfleld and Laura I. McLaughlin of tiie depart ment’s bureau of home economics. Ilo liable analyses printed in this and other countries and unpublished data from co-operating federal and state laboratories were used as tiie basis of these figures, and specialists in fruit production and handling were consult ed regarding them. It is believed that these figures more nearly represented tiie composition of fruits now grown and marketed in this country than any other extensive list of analyses here tofore published. Fuel Value. Protein, carbohydrates, and all the other chemical constituents are given in percentage of tiie edible portion of each fruit. Fuel value appears as cal ories per pound and per 100 grams. In making tiie tables particular care was taken to determine what part of the fruit was considered refuse in making the analyses, and to designate the refuse percentage as skin, seeds, or other inedible portion. Asa further aid to accuracy, the botanical as well ac tiie common name is given for each fruit. For varieties that differ markedly in composition or for types grown in different localities, separate averages are given. Under apples, for instance, are figures for early, medium, and late varieties, as well as an average for ail varieties. The averages for peaches grown in Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, and New Jersey bring out interesting dif ferences in sugar content. New Figure. With these new figures on fruit analyses, diets in both health and dis ease may he calculated more accurate ly. Economists can use them in mak ing closer estimates of nutritive value in food consumption studies. They will give producer and consumer more exact knowledge of the chemical con tent of fruits grown and eaten. Copies of these tables may he ob tained free as long as tiie supply lasts by writing to tiie United States De partment of Agriculture for Circular No. 50-C, “Proximate Composition of Fresh Fruit-S?’ Muscovy Ducks Favored by Arkansas Breeder I was the first to raise Muscovy ducks in this part of the country. My neighbors were astonished to see them sitting on the top of fences or in tiie loft of my barn. Feeding and laying habits of Mus covy ducks are much like that of chickens. It is not necessary to con fine them each morning to get their eggs, as is often the case with other ducks, writes B. G. Roberts of Ar kansas in Capper’s Farmer. They lie gin laying in February and often will lay until cold weather if not allowed to become broody. Like tiie goose they feed mostly on grass and other green matter and do not require much concentrated feed. Those who object to the noise made by other varieties of ducks prefer Mus covys for they quack only when badly frightened. The drakes can made no noise at all except a hissing sound. The young ducks are easy to raise. After they are 3G hours old I feed stale bread soaked in sweet milk. This is soon changed to a ration con sisting of two parts wheat bran, two parts shorts, one part yellow corn meal and a small amount of beef scraps. I feed this three to five times a day. Sand is sprinkled over it oc casionally for grit. ►js* ♦s* $ ♦>s j $ *s ♦s* ♦s* $* ij *s $* ♦s* ♦s $ *s• ♦j* ♦> % Agricultural Notes % v .j. .j. .j. .j. .j. .j **.;. .j. .j. >{ -j. ;• -j.
