J. L. D.
Jf spring came but once in a cen
tury. instead of once u year, or burst
forth with tbe sound of an earth
iiunke, , ,nnd not in silence,” wrote
I-ongfeilow, "what wonder and exi>ee
tat Inn there would be in all hearts
to behold the miraculous change!”
Hut to people who think and feel,
the vernal renewal of the pulse of life
<an nev r become commonplace. To
uch it is like taking up again a be-'
I loved book from which they have been
parted for a year.
April was called by the Anglo-Sax
j ins "Hustre month" for it was in this
I month they held a joyful festival in
| honor of Kastre.-their goddess of light
! and spring. It seems divinely appro
priate that the culminating festival of
the Christian religion should come in
i the spring time, and oftenest in April.
| For spring is the age-old prophecy and
I ymbol of life’s victory over seeming
(hath and dissolution.
It is the season when miracles
j abound. If we will but open our eyes
we shall see not one burning bush, but
every hillside, forest and meadow
I ablaze with the presence of God. How
J the vital germ leaps at the caress of
j the rain and the kiss of the sun iuto
a perfect expression of parental like-*
ness, is to us the mystery of mysteries.
But the greatest wonder of Spring
is that it should stir us to wonder at
all. If. indeed, we are not created in
"the likeness of Him that made us,”
why should we be more conscious of
its mystery and significance than the
clod or stone? It is because we pos
sess in some degree attributes of the
Divine Mind that we are able to won
der at His Marvelous handiwork.
To eyes that see, and ears that hear,
all heaven and earth now appear ar
rayed in bright garments to speak and
(omfort those who mourn at empty
sepulchres.
“There is no unbelief;
Whoever plants a seed beneath the
sod,
And waits to see it push away the
clod;
Trusts in God.”
1 have been wondering lately just
what is the matter with some of us
Americans, and I have been wonder
ing if maybe that isn’t it: Wonder
ing. There is more wondering going
on now than has been since the time
when Deacon Jones fell in the mash
and everybody wondered how he got
there.
If someone buys a car or builds a
house, we wonder how he got the mon
ey ; if someone gets married we won
tier why and wonder how it will turn
out. If a man makes a success we
wonder how he did it, and wonder if
it wasn’t just luck ; and wonder if he
is as well off as he says he is, and
wonder if he won't go broke some
day. I wonder if any of our wonder
ings changes the result any, and won
der if work wouldn’t?
If to love our enemies is asking too
much of us let’s compromise by forget
ting them.
County Schools
Closes Friday
Every county school in Rockdale
county will close up Friday of this
week on account of no funds to pay
expenses. If everything closed down
as promptly as our educational insti
tutions do when they are broke, there
would be several reorganizations
around here |>eriodieally. We even
manage to keep our automobiles gass
ed up when broke. Parents take for
granted that somebody else must keep
the schools ojien or close them and
all they have to do is furnish the pu
pils. Not much inducement for peo
ple to move to Rockdale. Itjjs easy to
unit. This advanced closing will kill
the county meet announced by Super
intendent Mrs. King this week. With
a consolidated system, we would have
enough money to operate upon a nine
.months basis and eliminate these six
months terms.
