Building
Ways to Hide Ugliness
of High Foundations
High bare foundations are distinctly
out of style nowadays, especially when
they are conspicuous and of a lighter
color than the house, but the way to
cover them up or make them disap
pear in some way, is not so easy to
find. Very often the lawn can be
graded up to the top of the founda
tion, or almost the top. a load or two
of dirt is not expensive, nnd can be
graded up to conceal almost all the
foundation around the front part of
the bouse. It might be well to terrace
it instead of merely sloping it down
to the front walk. A terrace often
adds a pleasant variety to the con
tour of a lawn; this would be prac
tically necessary if the lawn is deep.
Planting shrubs all around the house
will also serve fairly effectively to
conceal this broad strip. Cement
foundations are perhaps the worst of
fenders in foundations, because the
white of cement is so conspicuous.
One interesting example of beautifying
was recently cited: The house was
of a light chocolate color, and the
trimming, cream. Against the walls of
the house, the white foundation was
extremely ugly. The painter cleaned
the surface of the concrete well, ap
plied a coat of cement and concrete
paint in a color to match the siding;
when it was dry he applied a coat of
lead-in-oil paint, harmonized well with
the siding and the foundation disap
peared from sight.
Proper Selection of
Vines Most Important
There is much beauty in vines
properly chosen and well placed. A
little thought regarding the purpose
for which each vine is planted will
enable you to choose the proper one.
The vines which cling to brick and
masonry have little growths along
their stems which become fastened
to the wall. Such vines as Boston
ivy, English ivy and climbing eyono
mous belong in this group. Other
types of vines grown against walls
must have artificial support.
Many vines have a particular value
In their flowers, such as climbing
roses, wisteria and clematis. These
are all adaptable to lattice and trellis.
Vines with a climbing habit and heavy
foliage have their place in screening
and completely covering large spaces.
The Virginia creeper, Dutchman's
pipe, clematis, bittersweet and honey
suckle are examples. They make ex
cellent coverings for pergolas.
Sometimes it is fruiting qualities
that are desired. The bittersweets,
matrimony vines, climbing roses and
others have attractive fruits for pick
ing or for winter color and interest.
As important as the choice of vines,
is their proper placing. Vines on
houses should enhance the architec
ture and not obliterate it from view.
The outside chimney usually seems
cold and unattractive without the
companionship of a vine.
Salt Will Kill Weeds
Weeds which grow close to a foun
dation wherffit is difficult to cut them
may be destroyed in the following
manner providing it is not planned to
grow something in the immediate
proximity.
Dissolve approximately one pound
of rock salt in a pail of clean water;
mix thoroughly until dissolved and
pour as close to the wall as possible.
The solution will kill the roots of the
weeds.
A salt solution is also excellent for
killing weeds in a cinder drive where
they persist in coming up.
Plants Provide Wall
The walls or barriers separating the
garden from the rest of the grounds
may often be of plant materials.
Plants used in this manner can be
very effective in serving as a screen
and providing a truly beautiful ele
ment' in the general landscape scheme.
The barrier may itself become a pic
ture. Where strict formality is de
sired, it can also be obtained in plant
materials, if the varieties which can
be clipped are used.
Trees and Billboards
If tree-lined highways will eliminate
billboards, they are to be desired on
all counts. Providing them is a task
for state, community and individual.
As for their attractiveness, there are
enough delightfully shaded roads in
New England to prove it beyond all
necessity of bringing up for examp <

| HE WROTE IN 1892
When Dr. Caldwell started to practice
medicine, back in 1875, the needs for a
laxative were not as great as today.
People lived normal lives, ate plain,
wholesome food, and got plenty of fresh
air. But even that early there were
drastic physics and purges for the relief
of constipation which Ur. Caldwell did
not believe were good for human beings.
The prescription for constipation that
he used early in his practice, and which
he put in drug stores in 1892 under the
name of Dr. Caldwell’s Syrup Pepsin,
is a liquid vegetable remedy, intended
for women, children and elderly people,
and they need just such a mild, safe
bowel stimulant.
This prescription has proven its worth
and is now the largest selling liquid
laxative. It has won the confidence of
people who needed it to get relief from
headaches, biliousness, flatulence, indi
gestion, loss of appetite and sleep, bad
breath, dyspepsia, colds, fevers. At your

BRIDE RESCUES
HUSBAND, ILL IN
NATIONAL PARK
Trudged Thrse Days Through
Deep Snow to Take Him
to Hospital.
Washington.—The story of a bride
who, with a few of her pneumonia
stricken husband's comrades, trudged
for three days through the snow
sound Northwest to take him by
sleigh to the nearest hospital has Just
reached the National park service
from tiie Yellowstone National park.
Here is the tale as it was told by
an official of the Interior department
under which the park service func
tions :
Jack Worth, the husband, is keeper
of Old Faithful inn in the Yellow
stone. During bis service In the World
war one of ids lungs became affected,
making him susceptible to pneumonia.
Marries Park Employee.
In the warm sunlight and dry air
of the Yellowstone be was fast re
gaining his health. Last summer lie
married Miss Lulu Bach, another em
ployee of the park. The two settled
down for a honeymoon winter in spa
cious Old Faithful inn.
•I.ast month heavy snow fell in the
Yellowstone. Though the temperature
ranged around 40 degrees below zero,
PiSlslHr y
Pushed Ahead Through Snow.
Worth climbed to the roof of the inn
each day to shovel off the snow lest it
cave In. The low temperature and
raw air were too much for his weak
lungs. He contracted pneumonia.
The bride and her ill husband were,
isolated —without doctor or medicine.
Their only contact with the outside
world was by telephone. She sum
moned a few rangers who trudged
through the snOw to their aid.
Three Days on Way.
They talked of moving Worth to a
hospital by airplane, but decided a
plane could not take off in I lie deep
snow which surrounded the inn. Nor
could the park trucks make headway
through it.
Asa last resort Wortli was bundled
up well and put on a sleigh. For
three days bis wife and companions
pushed ahead through a snow covered
wilderness, while the temperature
dropped to 41 degrees below zero.
On the third day they reached an
outpost of civilization —a small rad
way station where a train was held
live hours awaiting the stricken man.
By train Worth was taken to a hos
pital ot Livingston, Mont. According
to the most recent report, lie is recov
ering.

Wife Ends Long Search
for Erring Husband
Los Angeles,—Because ha forgot lie

Schultz's troubles began several
years ago when his wife, returning
from a European trip, was informed

Mrs. Schultz began a search that
lasted some seven years, and finally
her husband was found with the

Britain Urges World
to Make War on Rats
The government of Great Britain
lias started a world war on the rats.
It is a world war because it is en
deavoring to have the other nations of
lhe world to follow her example, and
the threat is made that If something
In this direction is not done the result
will he disastrous. If the rat popu
lation of the world is allowed to in
crease ns it has done in the past few
years, the world will lie overrunwith
ruts and civilization will topple. Man
will be wiped from the face of the
globe. All the great plagues of his
tory are said to have been spread by
rats. One of the remedies is absolute
cleanliness. There is a close analogy
between the number of rats to be
found in a city and the sanitary con
dition of that city, one official de
clared. The more careful cities are
about tiie disposal of garbage, the
fewer rats they have, because lack of
food will control the normal increase
of the pests.
Pigeon Effective in
Role of Home Wrecker
Returning home to Philadelphia
from his vacation, Robert Hansford
opened his front door and pushed on
tiie light. Such a scene of destruction
met his eyes, that lie hurried to the
nearest drug store to call tiie police.
Two answered (lie call and, with
drawn revolvers and cautious steps,
searched tiie lower part of the house
for vandals. They found nothing but
confused wreckage. Upstairs they
found lamps overturned, bureau scarfs
pulled off, and in the bathroom, bot
tles broken on the tiled floor. In the
back room they discovered tiie culprit
—a very tired and very hungry pigeon
asleep on the bedpost. When it was
assured that no valuables were miss
ing, it was concluded that the bird
bad -sought shelter in tiie fireplace
chimney and had been unable to find
Us way out again.
