WITH FAVORS TO
PHOTOGRAPHER
Remarkable Matrimonial Ex.
periences Lot of West
Virginia Man.
Logan, W. Va.—U. S. G. Salyers,
widely known photographer of the Tri-
State section, is the central figure in
a strange tangle of romances. To him
Cupid has been exceedingly consider
ate and generous and he appears to
be keenly appreciative, says the Logan
(W. Va.) Bnnner. The story of his
marital adventures, all happy ones
and closely Interrelated, may be all
the more interesting locally because
he recently opened a studio in this
city.
Nine years ago, wiien operating a
chain of studios in Oiiio, Kentucky
and West Virginia as he is today,
Salyers hired Miss Adelln Thornton
as his assistant, speedily fell in love
with her and in 1019 took her for his
wife.
Their married life was happy and
uneventful for live years. Salyers says
they never once quarreled.
Then in 192-4 Miss Alice Whitt came
to work for Salyers in his studio at
Ironton, Ohio. In a short time she
and Salyers had fallen in love with
each other.
Divorced—and Married.
“We fried to forget and submerge
our love by taking on more and more
work to occupy our minds,” says Sal
yers. “The affair flourished for near
ly three years, find I saw that it could
not go on—that in fairness to every
one involved I should divorce my wife
and marry Alice.
“If was an easy matter to get the
divorce. My wife understood. Alice
and 1 were married on June 9, 1927.’’
But all three remained tlie best of
friends. And when Salyers and his

the first Mrs. Salyers went along, too.
They came back to Huntington and all
three worked together in the studio.
When vacation time came they all
went together on a not her trip. After
they got back, however, the first Mrs.
Salyers got a job in Chicago and left
Huntington. Her last words to her
former husband were, “If you are ever
divorced and want to remarry me. I’ll
be waiting for you.”
“When she said that,” says Sal
yers. “1 was on the point of going with
her for during the period of time we
had been divorced I had had the op
portunity to study her from the stand
point of an outsider and I had grown
to realize that 1 still loved her. Rut
] let her go and we didn’t write. She
didn't want to cause me or my wife
any unhappiness and tried to drop
completely out of our lives.
Re-Marries First Wife.
Rut it didn't work out that way
Salyers could not forget his former
wife. The second Mrs. Salyers re
alized it; and finally a few weeks ago,
she and Salyers were divorced.
Salyers promptly began tracing the
first Mrs. Salyers. He located her in
Chicago, lie wired her that he had
been divorced. Promptly lie got a wire
from her saying:
“Your telegram made me happier
than i ever have been since the day
we were married. Coming at once.
So she came back. And a few days
ago they were remarried.
“1 believe everybody Is happy at
last,” says Salyers.

Health Department Is
of Highest Importance
Standards that a city health depart
ment ought to follow in the handling
of contagious diseases are explained
by Dr. W. W. Bauer in a series of
articles in Hygeia Magazine, entitled
“l’our City and Your Health."
The citizen has a right to expect
prompt quarantine of persons with a
contagious disease and those who have
been exposed. Furthermore the health
department should investigate the
source and the meuns of spreading of
these epidemic diseases.
A community should have facilities
for hospitalizing persons with conta
gious diseases. There should be a
modern isolation hospital and not the
old-fashioned, disgraceful pesthouse.
Taking care of those who have con
tagious diseases is important but it is
not enough. The up-to-date health de
partment must be active in making
available the latest proved methods
for preventing epidemics.
There are certain definite tilings a
community should do about tubercu
losis, which is perhaps tlie most com
mon contagious disease there is except
colds. There should he clinics for
chest examinations, public health
nurses to visit tuberculosis patients
who are cared for at home and h
modern, well equipped sanatorium.
The community should also furnish an
open air school for children of tuber
culous parents or with apparent ten
dencies toward the disease.
Quebec Sees Value of
Trees Along Highways
Commendable agitation lias been
started by various bodies throughout
this province for the planting of trees
along tlie highways of Quebec. Apart
entirely from what the province has
done toward such planning, quite a
few rural municipalities have shown a
willingness to accept the innovation.
This is a movement that will have the
approval of all who are interested in
tlie beauty of our province. Tree
lined highways not only add to the
attractiveness of rural districts them
selves, but are a magnet to tourists.
The planting of trees is not a costly
undertaking and gives splendid re
turns for the labor and expense it in
volves. In many places in the United
States special commissions have been
appointed by legislatures whose sole
duty it is to undertake tree planting.
In New Jersey an act provides for a
special commission “whose duty it
shall be not only to plant trees along
highways of tlie state, hut to look
after their welfare as well.” Such a
measure is worthy of emulation in
Canada. —Montreal Star.
“Homey” Entrances
The simplest entrance to the home
is often tlie most effective. It doesn’t
take an elaboration of balconies, but
tresses, brackets, columns, beams and
arches to make an entrance that will
smile.
Haee is another rule. Keep the en
trance close to tlie ground. Entrances
high above the ground look stilted,
awkward, do not properly express the
idea of home. We build high en
trances for formal buildings like
schools and courthouses. To get an
entrance that sits close to the ground
means also that the house mpst he
set accordingly, which is as it should
be.
Industrie* Important
Industrial development is a trend
fn tlie entire field and is more prop
erly a state of mind, which is reflect
ed In the living conditions of the
army of the employed. This trend,
this state of mind and this reflection
is a sharp departure from tlie days of
tenement districts and a steady de
velopment toward individualistic
homes for working men and women.
Asa result, new industries mean ad
ditional homes, both contributing fac
tors toward the city’s growth, repre
sentatives of the chamber of com
merce, builders and real estate men
are pointing out.
Lawns Add Character
Any residential street, being a series
of homes, each having its lawn In
front, gives to the city’s appearance
a definite Influence, good, bad or in
different, according to the character
of the development or lack of it. It
can be truly said that it is the street
trees, attractive homes and well-land
scaped lawns that give streets of char
acter their distinction and give cities
the name of beautiful.
Curb Destructive Vine*
Climbing plants are often guilty of
vandalism. Boston ivy may not only
beautify your chimney but damage it;
Euonymus may pry off shingles and
clapboards; Wisteria has been known
to tear an ornamental iron railing
from its foundation on a brick wall.
Other garden favorites are equally de
structive.
Landscape Harmony
Harmony with tlie landscape always
should be in mind. Man must build
his house in "harmony with nature If
the home is to be beautiful. By fol
lowing nature’s lead and carefully se
lecting the house to fit the site, the
home will not only be more beautiful,
but more comfortable, practical and
serviceable.

Berlin, Germany, had a number
