SHIP’S CREW KEPT
ALIVE BY PRAYERS
Adrift Eight Days in Wave-
Buffeted Lifeboat.
New York. —Prayer and Bible read
ings sustained ten shipwrecked sailors
through eight days ot torture in a
wave-buffeted lifeboat, it was revealed
when the yacht Amidn reached port
with survivors of the four-masted
schooner, James E. Coburn.
Eieven men abandoned the Coburn
when it foundered on a voyage from
Baltimore to Martinique. They were
without food or water after tbe first
four days. Three of then' were white
men, tlie rest negroes. While smash
ing seas broke against the sides of
their twenty-foot yawl each man
prayed to his own conception of a
deity.
One of the white men, W. E. Mil
liken, engineer, became temporarily
insane and bis hysterical mutterings
added to the babel of prayers. One
of tlie negroes, \V. Sargent, sixty
year-old cook, died. His body was
not thrown overboard because the
other ten men in the boat were too
weary for the exertion involved.
Capt. Jose J. Pereira, of the Co
bum, was the only survivor who
could give a coherent account of the
terror-laden days before smoke from
the yacht Amida curled over the
horizon and the men in tlie lifeboats
knew rescue was at hand.
Captain McLaughlin, of the Amida,
said tie was fifteen miles off course
when he sighted the yawl. The sur
vivors were not told that the rescue
was made possible only by accident.
Canned meat i.nd hardtack were
put into the yawl when the schoon
er was abandoned. Salt water soaked
t lie crackers, however, and despite
scanty rations the meat soon was
gone. Four days before they were
saved there was no food or water
aboard.
Girl Bandit at Last
Meets Woman Waterloo
Nc York.—A girl bandit—of course
she was bobbed haired and blonde —
led a holdup in the best bobbed haired
bandit tradition and followed preced
ent so closely that after her arrest
she talked toe much and two men she
named to the police were arrested.
John Raszwolsky, owner of a gro
cery store, was the intended victim.
He was behind the counter when a
young woman and two men entered.
The woman, Raszwolsky told the po
lice, pointed a revolver at him and
demanded that he put up his hands
and also give them all the money lie
had.
Mrs. Raszwolsky was in their apart
ment behind Hie store and heard what
the woman said to her husband, so
she screamed as loudly as she could.
The scream unnerved ttie men with
the girl, who were holding ropes in
their hands ready to tie up the grocer
as soon as they had his money. The
men turned and made for the door and
the girl dropped her pistol and fol
lowed.
Raszwolsky seized her, but she broke
away. Too late, however, for Patrol
man Hoffman had heard the scream
and met the giri at the door with open
arms. She gave her name as Emily
Beloski, eighteen, and said she was
an honest laundress out of work. Upon
further Information she gave them,
detectives arrested William Moore,
thirty-one, and Nicholas Turetsky.
Moore said he was an Indian who
formerly lived on a Colorado reser
vation.

Climax Put Too Much

George Cohan said in a Y. M. C. A.
address in Brooklyn on play-writing:
“Then there are climaxes. We must
have rousing climaxes, of course. But
the trouble with most of these rousing
climaxes is that they are false.
“Like the grizzly bear story,
“Over the campfire in the mountains

** ‘Yes, gents,’ the young fellow said,
and lie gave a satisfied chuckle —‘yes,

Her Lucky Day
When Mr. and Mrs. Irving T. Clark,
of Rochester, N. Y., arrived at Perry,

greatly alarmed to find her $1,500 dia

searched the hotel at East Aurora,
where she had bad dinenr. Ttie ring
could not lie found in the hotel, so Mr.
and Mrs. Clark returned to East Au

curb in front of the hotel, where it
had lain for hours, unnoticed.
Diamond’s Origin
According to Greek legend, the dia
mond owed its origin to a beautiful,
pure-minded Greek youth of that
name, wiio bad helped to care for the
great god Jupiter in his cradle. Un
willing to see this beloved Diamond
suffer the ills and final extinction of
other mortals, Jupiter transformed
him into pure crystalized carbon, the
hardest and most brilliant substance
in nature, thus securing his immor
