The fifty-eight county aimshottses
in Georgia vary in sire from those cur
ing for one or two inmates to one car
ing for 191 persons: in annual ex
pense to the county frooi a few hun
dred do liars to fifty thousand dollars:
and in struct nr- frc*m a fe-v n*tt. n

old and infirm. Naturally the larger
and wealthier counties can l*etter pr>

ler ones.
Inmate-
There were 93t> oimatcs In these •>
aim-house- wht-n inspected in I&2S. >f
these !JS*j inmate- 613 or t>j per cent
were white while only 317 or 334 Pei
cent were colored. It was found that
10 almshouses had only white itimatv
when visited. Three almshouses ha-1
only colored inmates when visited.
Children Decreased
It is significant to note that th--
number of children found in the alms
houses on the occasion of the visits by
the department has decreased. In 1925
there were 33 children in almshouse-.
Phis number had decreased to ft iu
1926 and to 5 in lft27. Almshous < are
not suitable institutions for children.
The department has encouraged and
assisted in providing other and mere
satisfactory care than the almshouses
for children.
