Control Insects
%■. and Disorders
Annual From Pests and
Diseases Amounts to
'V* Immense Sum.
The annual loss of crops caused by
InsCct and fungus diseases In
Now York state exceeds the amount
appropriated each year to conduct
tho state’s business, according to n
bulletin qn the control of insects and
plant diseases, reprinted at tho New
York sflito college of agriculture at
Itfkncn, Jl. JL
By oactWl spraying experiments
conducted by growers tlmmsdves, It
Is shown ti|at the average annual
proventnblo Ipse tw potato growers in
tldh stilto heights and insects Is
nearly fifty ImshAt to the acre. This
represents a pearly losx of more than
ton million dollars Which might be
prevented by speeding lc& than ten
dollars nn acre for spraying.
Estimate of Losces.
A careful estimate of losses front
tho loose smut, of oats in New York
shows that five per cent of the crop
is destroyed annually by this fungus
disease, a net loss of more than a
million dollars hi 1919 wlign the gov
ern moot survey was made. The
losses from apple scab, codling moth,
and Han Joss scale, from peach yel
lows and fire blight, and from all the
other common Insect pests and de
structlve plant diseases, if they could
he accurately calculated, would show
a grand total of appalling magnitude.
This tremendous annual tux on the
plant production of the state might
be greatly reduced by the proper ap
plication of kaowu methods of con
trol.
The method of control to be em
ployed for h given insect pest of
fungus disease must be determined
by the nature and habits of the en
emy (tnd by the character of the crop
attacked. Plants can seldom be cured
of disease as are men and animals;
they must be protected from the at
tack. If sucking insects are to be
controlled, something must be applied
that will kill when it hits them; if
biting Inseots are to be combated, the
fruit and foliage of the plants must
he sprnyed or dusted with a poison
that when eaten will destroy the pest.
Prevent Diseases.
Many fungus diseases are prevent
ed by spraying the plants before the
disease appears, with a mixture de
structive to the fungus but harm
less to the plant. The poisons that
destroy fungi are seldom effective
against Insects, and hence we have
fungicides and insecticides. Often
these can be combined in one mix
ture for Insect and fungus pests of
certain crops as, for example, ar
senate of leaf! and lime sulphur for
controlling codling moth and apple
scab.
Best Planting Distance
for Many Fruit Plants
Many times fruit plants are planted
too close and growth is unsatisfactory,
states C. Woolsey, University of Ar
knnsaS collge of agriculture exten
sion ’service. The common distances
recommended are ns follows: Apples,
135 feet apart each way; peaches, 21
feet apart eacli way; cherries, 21 feet
apart each way; plums, 21 feet apart
each way; grapes, 8 feet apart in a
row that is 15 feet from the last row
of ttee fruits; blackberries, 8 feet
apart in rows 8 feet apart; raspber
ries, 8 feet apart in row-s S feet apart;
strawberries, 2V 2 to S feet apart in
rows 4 feet apart. \

Frequency of Milking
Cows Is Hard Problem
It Ls very difficult to establish a hard
and r*fe as to when a cow should
be milked out completely after calv
ing and how often she should be
milked. Like many other things In
the care of an animal, a great deal
depends upon the existing circum
stances. Care is not merely a matter
of frequency of milking but also avoid
ing tlio'se conditions that would cause
undue Inflammation at this particular
period. The understanding of the
Caretaker as to the condition of his
animal Is a very material factor.

Determining Mental Age
Mental age Is most uceurotelj
based upon the Individual Terman- j
Blggt jgst of intelligence. A child Is
snM to have a mental ago of ten
years, for example, when he passes
the ipsis on tffe Terman-Rinet scale
whifliT it Bhb been found, arc passed
by a majority of normal ten-year-old
children. Terman defines mental ng
ns follows: "By n given mental ngc
wo moan that degree of general men
tal ability as Is possessed by Hie aver
age child of corresponding chromWg
leal ago.”
A Wee Bit Time
A millionaire who wrote a rather
Illegible hand took n "place” In the
north of Scotland One night before
retiring he sent the head keeper de
tailed written Instructions for the
morrow.
Next morning lie was nwnkened
very early by the persistent skirling
of bagpipes beneath his window.
Summoning his man-servant, he nskod:
“What’s that racket?”
“Oh.” said the man, “that’s Donald,
the keeper, playing that wee bit tune
ye sent him last night.”
Wit of Conversation
The wit of conversation consists
more In finding It in others, than In
showing a -great deal yourself. He
who goes out of your company, pleased
with his own facetiousness and In
genuity, will the sooner come into It
again. Most men had rather please
than admire yon, and seek less to be
Instructed and diverted than approved
and applauded, and It is certainly tlie
most delicate sort of pleasure, to
please another.—Franklin.
