COMEANY Citizen Wherever We Serve - Sixteen-Year-Old Girl Successor to Suzanne MHe Leila Anet, aged sixteen, Is ; bailed, os the tennis nlnver on pable of filling the vacancy left by Suzanne Lenglen, the former amateur tennis champion. ~ Suzanne adnfth# that she expects to njarry itatdwln N. (“Lucky”) Baldwin of California, and that even now her tennis days are over. Mile Anet has been playing tennis ever since she was strong enough to hold n racquet, and scoring victories over older adversaries since she was thirteen years old. She Is the daughter of M. Claude Anet, well-known author. He fully sympathizes with her ambition to be come a court star nnd gives her the benefit of hls amateur success, just as the late M. Lenglen trained Su zanne. Mile. Anet attracted little attention by her oarly successes, but experts began to talk about her ns the new hope when she recently won the erl terlum de lawn tennis In a sensation al victory over Mile, Adnmoff, nil Armenian star. She Is playing regu larly In Paris and on the Riviera. Struggle for National League Pennant Narrow For several seasons It has been ngreed nnd demonstrated that the struggle for the National lengue pen nant lies among four teams, with the other four merely in there to make possible a 154-game schedule and to fill up the second division berths. New- York, Chicago, St. Louis and Pittsburgh are the actual pennant con tenders. Cincinnati. Brooklyn, Bos ton and Philadelphia will fit Into their old grooves In the second division. The American league, despite the supremacy of the New York Yankees, has witnessed the rise and fall of a number of other clubs, so that the first division is not all booked up like a tourist pullman until the season gets well under way. Even the Yanks tumbled right down into seventh place when they ceased winning for a sea son. Bib Falk Tells Why He Is Glad to Be Indian Bib Falk, the lean Texan who used to play plenty of outfield for the White Sox when he happened to feel like it, has more than one reason for rejoicing in his trade to the Indians. Ills first Is that he thoroughly hated the Chicago management. His second is that he likes Roger Peckinpaugh, his former teammate, and wants to play ball for him. His third is that he is joining the club that has two of the six good southpaw pitchers in the league, for he doesn’t like to hit against southpaws. “I’m sure glad I’m on your side,” he told Joe Shaute and Walter Miller. “Now there’s only Pennock and Wal berg left, and they say Tennock’s arm may be gone.” Manager McGraw Has His Pitching Staff Intact Manager McGraw has his 192S pitch ing staff intact and expects Carl Hub hell, who joined the Giants late in the season, to declare dividends on his ex perience gained under major league fire. Ilubbell will be a starting pitcher with Larry Benton, Fred Fitzsimmons, Joe Genewich and Dutch Henry, a southpaw who seems to have regained his earlier form. Carl Mays, the veteran underhand performer, may Join the group ns ids arm has recovered at least a part ot its old cunning. John Scott, another veteran, will be a valuable man in re lief roles and Curly Ogden lias shown well. A merry battle is being fought out by the recruits with the end not yet in sight. Small Oat Hullers Now Available for Farm Use Small oat hullers with capacities of 45 to 50 bushels per hour are now available for farm use. They are usually owned by individual farmers bt are sometimes used by a group of neighbors or occasionally mounted on a farm truck for custom work. Ma chines of this kind, which can be driven by a 5-horse-power electric motor, will also hull and scarify clover seed, crack corn, wheat or rye, hul speltz or skin and crack barley. These added uses of the huller help to keep it busy, cutting down its cost per hour of operation and lessening the expense of making a more valuable feed out of the oats crop. Tillable Areas Favored for Increasing Pasture Various methods of obtaining a stand of sweet clover on pasture land have been tried dm n the past few years. Those Inc ode very liberal' liming—four tons of lime tone Per acre-plus disking befor seeding, sowing on late snows or frost cracked soil, spading small areas to serve as centers of seed distribution, and various fertilizer treatments. Only a few stunted plants have resulted from any of these methods, and It is concluded that only tillable areas aie suitable for the purpose of increasin, pasturage with sweet clover.
