Wisest Men Have Ever Been Slow of Speech People are likely to set too much store by “conversation.” Avery large proportion of It isn’t worth 2 cents. It must be conceded that there Is a kind of exhilaration in tnlklng. One can even get headache by It; allowing that lit has a direct offset on the tem po of the heart and on the nervous system. The popular notion that one must talk “for the sake of relief" Is probably bogus; because silence, once it Is learned and practiced, gives a greater relief. Keeping still Is an Interesting game, to the point of being, at times, de lightful ; especially when employed to keep out of a furious row under full headway. It Is a dilticult game, there fore the more Inviting to piny. One muy suffer from the invidious Impli cation that It Is timidity instead of good sense that keeps hhn from par ticipation, but let him remember that many of the wisest men within hu man knowledge were tactlturn —‘‘mind- ed their own business,” and we don’t know but that the slow to speech get along about ns well ns the wordy nnd Inipnssionnte; some think, better, —St. Louis Globe-Democrat. Washington's Cherry Trees Mrs. Taft shortly after going Into the White House ordered 80 Japanese cherry trees to be sent to Washing ton and planted. She had seen and ad mired these trees while traveling In the East. A Japanese resident of New York made her a gift of 2,(MX) of these trees. When they reached America they contained an insect that was In jurious to American plants. For that reason they were thrown overboard. The city of Toklo then gave the United States B,(MM) of these trees. The water side around the Speedway and the Tidal basin in Washington have these trees In blossom during the early spring. Honoring tlie Dead Annunl Decoration day Is most en thusiastically observed by the Lower Yukon Itiver Indians. Lnte Inst au tumn fifteen families of Indians from Nulato and other villages met together to fulfill the custom of erecting houses over the graves of those who died dur ing the year. The shelters of the old graves were given a fresh coat of bril liant paint. Many of the unique mausoleums have windows and floors and contain rugs and other articles that were used by the departed ones. Every western Alnska Indian tribe has a different method of protecting the spirit of departed ones. i Cumbersome Old Veel* Galleon was a name formerly given to a large kind of vessel with three 'masts und three or four decks, such as those used by the Spaniards In their commerce with South America to transport precious metals. They '’were large, clumsy, squnre-sterned ves sels, having bulwarks three or four feet thick, all of which were so en cumbered with tophamper and so over weighted in proportion to their draft of water that they could bear little can vas, even with smooth sens and light ; winds. More Howlers “A schoolboy’s essay on Henry VIII included in the sentence: ‘At this time King Henry walked with great diffi culty, having an abbess on his knee.’" A business man says that a short age in any commodity automatically raises Its value. —This is doubtless the reason for the high price of evening gowns. No Standing Still Progress is essential in this life. But whether it shall be forward or backward is for you to decide. You i cannot stand still. This is Impossible. The world Is only a stairway on which men go either up or dowu.—Grit. Much Sound Wisdom in Tagalog Proverbs Following are proverbs of ancient repute among the Tagalog people In nnd nround Manila: Nothing but rust destroys Iron. Thorns thrust deep when the step Is swift. Though you be fur behind, wit may put you abend. A drunken man may be twitted with impunity; not so tie who Is awukened from sleep. Noisy waters are always shallow. Never seek fortune; if really yours it will come of Itself. Even water-soaked wood will burn If left long enough In the lire. Repentance never precedes the folly. The savings of today are the comforts of tomor row. Even a rag, put invny In the closet, will turn up for good use. The really wise will always shame him who merely pretends to wisdom. A small stool made of sound wood Is better than a bishop's chair honey combed with borers. When a pullet begins laying eggs, chickens may be expected. Criticize yourself before doing so to others. IJe the aim never so exalted, the shaft goes no farther than the strength of the archer. He who spits at the sky gets the spray In his face. Founding wet rice In the mortar only besmears the workman. His Beard Too Close When Tire Blew Oul Probably the first man (o devise a fluid to make automobile tires punc ture proof was A. L. Dyke of St. Louis, a pioneer In the automobile In dustry. The earliest automobiles had single tube tires, made by bicycle tire man ufacturers and glued to the rims of the wheels. They punctured with ease and frequentcy. When that happened it was necessary to stop, pry off the glued tire, stick rubber bands in the bole nnd glue them there, put the tire back, glue It to the rim and wait for the glue to dry. Dyke brought out a sticky substance that could be squirted Into a tire In place of air. But an Illinois physician, who wore a benrd, was inspecting a tire thus filled when It blew out. He threatened to sue Dyke for the Joss of his beard, for It had to be shaved off. —St. Louis Post-Dispatch. HUtoric English Ports The Cinque ports were originally five seaport towns on the coast of Kent and Sussex, England, called in early times “the live most important havens in the kingdom.” They were enfranchised by Edward the Confes sor. William the Conqueror subse quently granted them the privilege of an almost Independent state, under command of a warden, with a court at Dover castle. The five ports were Sandwich, Dover, llythe, Romney and Hastings. Wlncheisea nnd Rye were ndded later. Up to the reign of Henry VII their chief function was the sup ply of the country’s nnval contingent. Dating from the revolution of IGBB their privileges were gradually abol ished, the lord warden’s jurisdiction ceasing in 1835. No Snake* in Green I*le The Biological survey says that there nre no snakes native to Ireland nnd never have been, so far ns there nre authentic records. This is due to Its geograpldc position, isolated ns it Is from the region in which these vertebrates originated nnd which they now occupy. A few attempts have been made to Introduce harmless spe cles, but ns yet Its records show none established on the Island. This may be due to a lack of proper environ ment, climate, disease or other abnor mal condition. The slow-worm or Ing worm, a legless lizard which super ficially looks very much like n snake, is native to Ireland, nnd may account for some of the snnke records of that country. Horse Racing Old Sport Horse racing lias been called the “sport of kings" because it has been one of their nmusements since the earliest dawn of civilization. Tho thmes I of the Eighteenth Egyptian dynasty left a papyrus letter telling of his conquest of Mesopotamia nnd priding himself upon the acquisition of the racing horse (the Arab) and being the first to Introduce him in Afrlcn. Somewhat later the records tell of King Solomon buying horses ifrom Egypt nnd paying ns much ns SB,OOO for some of them. Among the Greeks horse rncing wns introduced into the Olympic games In the thirty third. Olympiad (048 B. C.). Earned Hi* ‘Tip” Tipping was not unknown 100 years ago, one may see from the following article that appeared in a Pittsburgh paper In 1828: "Mr. Beale received from Philadel phia on Monday last an entire load of oysters, principally in the shell. The wagoner was laden exclusively with oysters. He wns 11 days only on the road and he received SIOO carriage. In consequence of his expedition and his attentive nnd careful man agement Mr. Beale paid the wagoner S3B more thun the amount usually received for the amount of lading.’’— Detroit News. | " Health Hint Loss of Bleep is worse than starva tion so far as its damaging effects upon the body and mind are con cerned. If you keep regular hours there should be no diflieulty about sleeping. If there is, find the cause before it undermines you.
