Date of Christ’s Birth
Not*Positively Known
It is generally assumed that we are
living in the year 1029, but the year
may really be 1933, or even later.
This fact is indicated by a record
of an eclipse of the moon. Bible his
tory says that Christ was born during
[lie reign of Herod the Great. But
Herod died in the spring of 4 B. C.,
Hie exact date being fixed by a lunar
eclipse which took place the night be
fore Ids death.
Obviously, therefore, Jesus might
have been born not later than 4 B. C.,
and possibly earlier.
The church has no definite knowl
edge of the date of Christ’s birth. It
fixed the year, month and day of the
month arbitrarily.
Astronomers are able to calculate
the dates of past eclipses as accurate
ly ns those of the future, and so have
determined the very day and hour of
the eclipse that ushered Herod tl*e
Great out. of this life.—Condon Mail.
Claimed She Had Proof
Senator McNary said in the course
of an argument at a Washington
luncaeon:
“He claims that he understands the
farm problem, but the proofs he ad
vances remind me of the movie star.
“She was jilting a hook and eye
man, and he said to her bitterly:
“‘You don’t know what love is.’
‘“I do so. I know all about it.’ said
the movie star. ‘Wasn’t I dead stuck
on my fifth husband?’” —Detroit Free
Press.
Encourage French Births
The French firm of Michelin began
some years ago to make family allow
ances among its employees, based on
the size of the family. The birth of a
child is a positive economic advantage.
Asa result it is reported that the birth
rate in the Michelin community is
twice that of France as a whole, hiv
ing conditions are good; therefore, the
rate of infant mortality is low.
Another Bird Refuge
Anew bird refuge has been estab
lished on a group of islands off the
tip of Florida by executive order of
President Hoover. The group consists
of Snake key, North key and Dead
Man or Bird key. It will be known ns
the Cedar keys bird refuge and will be
administered by the biological survey
of the United States Department of
Agriculture.
Glass Blackboards Favored
Educators of Europe are taking
much interest in the proposal to sub
stitute blackboards of translucent
ground glass lighted from behind in
place of the usual black surface now
found in schoolrooms. It Is claimed
that the new boards allow everything
chalked on them to be seen by every
pupil.
Train Makes Record Run
What is claimed to be the longest
non-stop railway run ever made was
recently accomplished in South Amer
ica. A Beardmore-Dlesel electric en
gine hauled a special train from Buenos
Aires to Cipoletti, a distance of 775
miles, in 20 hours 37 minutes.
Agreeable to Him
Widow —Will you act as a pallbear
er at my husband's funeral?
Polite Friend —Nothing would give
me greater pleasure.
Live and Learn
He (hopefully)—l’ve never seen such
dreamy eyes.
She (fed up)—That’s because you’ve
uever stayed so late before. .. ■ ;

Flyer at Seventy-Five
Learning to fly at seventy-five—this
is the record that lias just been set up
by Sir Horace Plunkett, the Irish
statesman. And it was only a year or
so ago that experts were gravely say
ing that thirty-five was the extreme
limit of age for an airman. Even
more wonderful, perhaps, is President
Hindenburg’s idea of a holiday. The
great German soldier and statesman
took a vacation from the cares of
state the other day—and went off to
stalk chamois in the Bavarian Alps.
This involves long tramps on the hills
and prolonged spells of crawling on
hands and knees. And President Hin
denburg is eighty-two!
Overcharged
Maurice often is his father’s com
panion on trips to the country to re
pair lights that generate their elec
tricity with batteries. On one of
these* occasions he was invited into
the grape arbor to eat grapes to his
heart's content. After the return
home in the wee hours of the morning
the lad’s father was awakened by
groans.
“What’s the matter, son,” Inquired
the father.
“I think an overcharge of grapes, 1 ’
replied the lad.
Ten years after Umberto Paldechi of
Milan began to court Signorita Maria
Daldrevo he shot her because she re
fused to marry him.
