On First Ballot.
The Republican party in con
vention at Chicdgo yesterday no‘m
inated WmT H, Taft of Ohio as
their candidate for president. He
received 702 of the 979 votes cast,
on first ballot. He was then made
unanimous choice ot the conven
tion after which adjournment was
taken till 10 o’clock today when a
vice presidential candidate will be
chosen. The following is a list of
names of the candidates, (except
President Roosevelt who was not a
candidate hut received "3 votes)
and the vote each received.
For Joseph B. Foraker of Ohio
16 votes.
Fhr Charles W. Fairbanks of
Indiana, 10 votes.
For Jos'eph G. Cannon of Illi

Macon, Ga., June 17.—Willie Buf
fington, twelve years old, who has for
three or four years been a newsboy,
w T as drowned in the. Ocmulgee river,
just below the city, when he went in
bathing with a crowd of his compan
ions. The boy went too far into
the heavy current, and being unable
to swim, was •drowned
