“German
Syrup”
Here is an incident from the South
—Mississippi, written in April, 1890,
just after the Grippe had visited that
country, “lam a fanner, one of
those who have to rise early and
work late. At the beginning of last
Winter I was on a trip to the City
of Vicksburg, Miss.,where I got well
drenched in a shower of rain. I
went home and was soon after seized
w r ith a dry, hacking cough. This
grew worse every day, until I had
to seek relief. I consulted Dr. Dixon
who has since died, and he told me
to get a bottle of Boschee's German
Syrup. Meantime my cough grew
worse and worse and then the Grippe
came along and I caught that also
very severely. My condition then
compelled me to do something. I
got two bottles of German Syrup. I
began using them, and before taking
much of the second bottle, I was
entirely clear of the Cough that had
bung to me so long, the Grippe, and
all its bad effects. I felt tip-top and
have felt that way ever since.”

WOMEN IN COUNCIL.
Great Gathering of the Woman’s Tem
perance Union at Boston.
A Boston, Mass., dispatch says: Four
thousand people packed Tremont tempie,
and overflowed into Park street church
and Brumfield street church near by,
Friday morning when tho monster
world’s convention of the national
Woman’s Christian Temperance Union
was called to order. Three thousand
delegates from every state and territory
were | recant. 'I he hall was elaborately
decorated. Miss Willard called the con
vention to order, and made an impas
sioned address. The treasurer’s report
showed the ri eeipts to be $25,259; ex
penditures, $23 217; membership, 153,-
402—a gain of 10,369.
Miss Willard, in her address, said: So
the good work goes on. New territory
is preempted, and woman’s mighty
realm of philanthropy encroaches each
day upon the empire of sin, disease and
misery that has so long existed—that we
thought must endure forever. But there
remains immense territory to be possessed.
'lhe chinch itself must have anew cru
sade. It must become the people’s home.
Its doors of gospel grace must stand open
nfiht and day. It must not be a huge
locked up cube of masonry, with a dead
atmosphere during six days of the week,
f-r such cannot be the twentieth century
exponents of the church of Him who
went about doing good. We must draw
the people to the church by having some
thing there for them which will lead
them up through material perception
and love of spiritual blessings.
That party which uumis akably de

Chri-tian Temperance Union. We nailed
tha l banner to the masthead in 1884,and,
sink or swim, five or die, survive or per
ish, we will keep it wavi g.
Miss Willard then dwelt at length
upun scientific temperance instruction,
temperance lileratuie, medal contests,
the temp ranee press, the labor question,
evangelistic work, work among police
men, Sabbath observance, social purity,
m rr age and divorce, puiityin literature
and ari, the woman’s temperance temple
and rational temperance hospital—in
stitutions all de?.r to the heart of the
white ribboner. She was followed by
L dy Henry Somerset, who made a brief
address. The rest of the day was taken
up in reports and singing.

A WICKED BANKER
Confesses that He Stole His Patrons’
Securities.
A cablegram from Berlin says: Ger
man financial circles were startled Friday
morning by the news that Banker Mass,
head of the firm at Charlottenburg, a
suburb of Berlin, had surr. ndered to the
police, confessing the misappropriation
of customers’ securities. The amount
stolen will be large. Though the aris
tocracy was not so hard hit as by the
V\ olff failure, it is sure to attract the
emperor’s attention. The embezzlement
inc ludes 2 1,000 marks which had been
subscribed 'ownrd the fund for a church
in memory of the late Empress Auguste,
grandmother of Emperor William;
10,000 marks which were to be devoted
to Prince Frederick Charles institute also
disappeared. Mass also made away witb
400,000 marks deposited in his bank by
150 artisans and small traders. These
poor persons can ill afford the loss en
t iled upon them through Mass’ steal
ings, and it is feared much suffering
among them will result from the banker’s
heartless action. He surrendered from
fear of their wrath.

‘ ‘How is It that ticket sellers on a email
salary can affoid to live so well?” re
peated tho veteran t heatrical man after
me.
“Why, my boy. it is simple enough.
Stapd in the box office of a large theatre
any n ght and you will understand it.
You see, a large part of the seats are
sold within half an hour of earh perform
ance. That means the hand ing of a
sreat deal of money in aver short time.
In ihe rush a g oat maDy people are
bound to get exeitt and and iorg> t all about
how much money they have and how much
change they should get back. Their
c ri-lessness is the '-icket seller’s gain.
Not that he does anything wrong or that
there is anything approaching to cheat
iug.
“For instance, an excited man rushes
up to the % window after the curtain has
gone up, throws down a teu do lar bill
and a-ks for five seats. He should get
back two dollar- and a half in change.
But as soon as the tickets ate handed him
he grabs them and rushes into the thea
H-r. Another man bthind him shoves
the bills to one side and demands the
hi st seats in the house.
“Th s happens once or twice .in the
cqursf- of the night, and that is the rea
son why ticket sellers have a much better
income than most folks suppose.
“Ticket selling for a circus is still
more profitable. 1 knew a man once of
fered a large royalty for ihe privilege of
running the ticket wagon of a big circus.
‘'Of course tho ticket seller only turns
over to th- manag rs as much money as
sold tickets call for. The rest be keeps,
for he has no way of knowing who it
really does belong to. Ot course, if the
careless one misses it and goes to claim

. You can't believe
some dealers always. They want to
sell the medicine that pays them tho
largest profit. What you want to
buy is tho one that does you the
most good.
Which one is it?
Sometimes, it may -be a matter
of doubt. But, in the case of
Dr. Pierce’s. Favorite Prescription,
there’s no room for doubt. It’s a
matter that can bo proved.
With the facts before you, it’s
an insult to your intelligence to
have something else offered as
“ just as good.”
And here’s the proof : Among
all the medicines that claim to cure
woman’s peculiar weaknesses, irreg
ularities, and diseases, tho “ Favor
ite Prescription ” is the only one
that’s guaranteed.
If it doesn’t do all that’s claimed
for it, if it doesn’t give satisfaction
in every case, you’ll have your
money Lack.
There’s strength and vigor for
every tired and feeble woman,
health and anew life for every
delicate and ailing woman —and if
there’s no help, there’s no pay.

No one could write aueh a book to-day. It reek,
of its time. The smoke of battle overspread- it.
and the rush of the charging cavalry sweep,
through Its pages. A, a prose epic of the lost
cause it deserves a place in the library of all who
would not altogether forget the glorious past.
