The week has been one of unprecedented
rain throughout the southern states, with
rumors here and there of spring freshets and
floods. No danger is reported as yet
There is the usual amount of gossip and
adventure, crime and casualty to report, and
a summary of which will be found below.
Virginia.
Richmond, Va??? March 3.???Moses M. Ellick, dry
goods merchant In the lower part of this city, was
fatally shot to-dsy by his son Moses. The young
man fired four shots at his father, two of which took
effect in his back. Tho son was arrested while in
the act of shootirg hfs father. Ill treatment of
his mother and other domestic troubles arc ahegad
as the cause of the tragedy.
Norfolk March 8 ??? Au explosion of the Virginia
com press works this afternoon completely wrecked
the msshlug and engine rooms, and It Is feared
buried one or two persons under the debris. This
company bare just adopted a new method by
which three bales are compressed into the size of
one, and were experimenting when the explosion
occurred. The loss Is probablv 125 COO.
PKTKRSBURO. March 4.???This afternoon a fire
broke out In the commission house of W. T. Hub
bard, on Sycamore street, which stored 100 ha ? ??* of
cotton. 500begs of peanuts, and a large quantity of
salt. The fire originated in the cellar by a ball of
cotton becoming ignited from a candle. Less

flutter in official circles. Through a trustworthy

state officials have been apprised of a contemplated
bold raid on tho state treasury. The work has been

Aspalaga. Fla.. March 4 ???Mr. J. E. Calder,
Atlanta, who held the position of carpenter on

Mr. Calder walked on the guard and was looking
at the wheel, when the pilman came down on
him and carried his body through an

except one snot, which passed through the victim,
took effect in hit lower extremities, probably lull let

Morristown, March 4.???Four members of tho

Poverty Flat was well named, for there was prob
ably more abject wretchednisi contained wllbJn
the limits of tho camp than ln any other through
out the entire state. The principal mines ln the
neighborhood were those of the great Continenta
Tunnel company, whish gavo employment to a
largo number of men. The flat was an Irregular
shaped piece of ground, lyiog on both sides of the
creek at the base of two mountains, not largo enough
to deserve the namo of valloy, but forming the
only spot in the neighborhood sufficiently level for
the purpose of building the cabins of the miner. A

with them and tho rows of cablns-contalnlng but
one room each???furnished a .poor shelter (o c a large
population of men. women and children. One of
the families on tho flat, that of Patrick Flemming,
