The incident is related, without, however,
giving tbe name, both in General Hood's
book, "Advance and Retreat," and In Jeffer
son Davis a second volume of the ???Hiss and

Captain Jackson was a youth of 17 when
the war broke out, and went to Virginia
against tbe will of bis father. He got on
General A. R Lawton's SUIT. At the bailie
ofHliarpshurgGfneral Lawton was command.

Sheridan was making a reconnoisance. He
offered ins my parole, saying it would be
much more agreeable for me to ride back with
the officers than under the surveillance of the
soldiers, who were always disposed to have
fun at toe expense of prisoners. X accepted
the courtesy. Hr went on to say that some
ot our civilian officers of tbe south bad curi
ous ideas of parole. They at-emed to think
that to accept it wsa to compromise their
principles, and that he had had Intelligent
gentlemen of the southern army that he bad
captured reply to an offer of parole with in-
suiting language. He added that he had
learned to hesitate In extending this courtesy
to captured southern officers. I replied to
hint that it simply grew out of ignorance of
the matter, end instead of indicating rude-
met, evinced tbe stern spiiit of our soldiers
in adhering to their cause.
There occurred a sharp little incident that
illustrated Sheridan's foresight. To the right
of the road was an eleva'ed woods where
some confederate infantry were posted. Colo-
tliere. lie had pruned the truth with Ilia
keen military eye. I declined to inform him,
He Insisted on toy toiling him what f knew.
I refused. A sharp little rpat occurred, he
insisting that as my captor he was entitled to
Whatever information X possessed, and de
manded its disclosure. Fiudirg his menace
unavailing lie apologlxid for hi* teeming
rudeness, and chatted away. He finally
wisely concluded not to tackle the point and
retired. 1 found him intelligent and cour
teous, a social man of the world, and an
agreeable companion. With his sunvity
there wss an incisive sort of bearing, speech
anti manner that impressed me, and I ven
tured the belief that he had bright military
promise.

1803, quite a novel incident took place at the
???eigoof Morris Island, on tile cosst ot South
Carolina. Captain Pratt, Of the fifltb Maine-
chnsetia Infantry, tells tho Incident. They
broke the ground to erect a heavy battery be
tween Wagner and Gregg. After Captain
Fratl bed pieced the first relief on duty he
walked out to the beech. He sew there two
???oldrere sitting in a large hole made by a
confederate shell. Upon being esketl who
they ware they replied that they belonged to
tho aecond relief. He expected that they
were shirking their duty, and he kept them
In Itla ntlnd. The captain again walked out
to the beach after the second relief had been
S laced on duty, and found the saute men sli
ng in the shell hole, who failed to recognize
him In tbe dark. Ho rrpeeted his Inquiry,
and was told by them thut they belonged to
the first relief that had just come off of duly.
Almost at tbe sente moment he looked across
Ibo harbor towards Fori Moultrie, lor he was
on tbe beach facing it. and saw a mortar ghell

Another Gaorgla soldier who wes mortally
wounded lit the "bloody angle'' at Hpottsyl-

smile:

quently did, and it was trout this demijohn
that he took this single drink. He drank it
from a tn cup, sweetened it with brown
sugar, pat water in it anti called it "grog."
In the early part of the war ha smoked, but
soon abandoned the habit and did not use

was* singularly just man, and be was as
chaste and modest as a woman. Ha had great
respect for women, and he had no patience
with any man who trilled with tbe virtue of
women. He wae a remarkable men in all
the relatione of life. He did uot gamble at

amusement He was* member of no church.
He was, however, a strong believer io the
doctrimaof the Christian religion, and there
was a strong current of religious feeling in
bis nature. He rarely ever used profane

except when he was greatly aroused. He
was a silent man. While be wat a pleasant
acquaintance, be was particularly fond of
the few with whom he wea specially intimate,

name 1 never knew, but know well how he

a fecund or two had elapsed when a ball from

1 have also in my posseaeion a number of
papers in German, bearing important official
aealN and stumps, and signed by high officials
of Austria, one bearing tbe official signature
of Francis J oseph 1, emperor of Austria.
They were captured and handed to me by the
captain of tuv company (now dead.) I have
never been able to read them, nor ascertain
from them tho owner's name. They seem to
be important document#, and I hope may he
recovered by the proper persons to whom
they belong. Ton owner was captured and
sent to Richmond, and may yet be living.
