Ms Cummins Chased be a Rhinoceros,???
Oa the 22d, says Mr. Cumming, ordering my
men to move on toward a fountain in tbe
center of tbe plain, I rode forth with Buyter,
and held east through a grove of lofty and
???wide-spreading mimosas, most of wbioh were
more or lees damaged by thegigantiostrength
of a troop of elephants, which had passed
there abont twelve months before. Having
proceeded abont two miles with large herds
of game on every side, I observed a ernaty-
lookfng old bull borele, or black rhinoceros,
cocking his ears one hundred yards in ad
vance. He had not observed ns; and eoon
after he walked slowly towards us, and stood
broadside to, eating some wait-a-bit thorns
within fifty yards of me. I fired Irom my
saddle, aad sent a bullet in behind his ehoul-
, ders, upon which he rushed forward about
one hundred yards in tremendous consterna
tion, blowing like a grampus, and then stood
looking abont him. Presently he made off
I followed, bnt found it bard to come up with
him. When I overtook him I saw the blood
running freely from his wound,
The chase led through a large herd of blue
wildebeests, zebras, and springboks, which
gazed at us in utter amazement. At length I
fired my second barrel, but my horse was
fidgety, and I missed. I continued riding
alongside of him, expecting in my ignorance
that at length he would come to bay, which
rinocerosea never do; when suddenly he fell
flat on his broadside on the ground, bnt, re
covering his feet, reanmed his course as if
nothing had happened. Becoming at last an
noyed at the length of tbe chase, as I wished
to keep my boraea fresh for tbe elephants,
and being indifferent whether I got the rhi
noceros or not, as I observed that his born
was completely worn down with age and the
violence of hia disposition, I determined to
bring matters to a crisis; so, sparring my
horse, I dashed ahead, and rode right in his
path. Upon this the hideona monster instant
ly charged me in the most resolute manner,
blowing loudly through bis nostrils; and,
although I quickly wheeled about to my left,
he followed me at snch a furious pace for
several hundred yards, with his horrid horny
snout witbln a few yards of my horse???s tail,
that my little bushman, who was looking on
in great alarm, though bis master???s destruc
tion inevitable. It was certainly a very near
thing; my horse was extremely afraid, and
exerted his utmost energies on the occasion.
The rhinoceros, however, wheeled abont, and
continued his former course, and I, being
perfectly- satisfied with the interview which I
had already enjoyed with him, had no desire
to cultivate his acquaintance any further,
and accordingly made for camp. We left the
fountain of Bootlonamy the same day, and
marched abont six milrs through an old gray
forest of mimosas, when we halted for the
night. Large flecks of guinea fowls roosted
in the trees around onr encampment, several
of which I shot for my sapper.
On the 23d we iospsnned by moonlight,
and continued onr march through a thinly
wooded, level country. It was a levely
morning; the snn rose in great splendor, and
the sky was besir (fully overcast with clouds.
Having proceeded abont ten miles, the coun
try became thickly oovered with detached
forest trees and groves of walt-a-btt thorns.
The guides now informed us that the wster,
which is called by the Beehnanas ???Lepeby,"
fore me. Dismounting from my horse, I sat
AND PIC. 'down tothtnk what 1 should do. Iknewex-
actly by my compiss ihe course we had been
fleering since we left Booby. I sccordlngly
resolved to ride southwest fer many miles,
the coarse of the wagops having been north
east, end then to tend Buyter across tbe
country a little to the north of west, while I
should bold a corresponding course in an
easterly direction. By this means one of us
could not fail to find the spoor, and I arrang
ed that at nightfall we sbonld meet at some
conspicuous tree. Having thns resolved, I
mounted my horse, which was half dead with
thirst and fatigue, and. having ridden south
west for several miles, I and Buyter separated
at a conspicuous tree, and rode in opposite
directions. Before riding far I recognized
the country as being the spot where I bad
seen the leopards in the morning. 1 at once
followed Buyter, and fired several signal
shots, which be fortunately heard, and seon
joined me. We then rode dne east, and
eventually, to my inexpressible gratification,
was only a short distance in advance, upon
which I saddled steeds, and rode ahead with
the bnshman, intending to hnnt for an honr
before breakfast. Presently wo reached an
open glaeo in the ferest, where I observed a
herd of zebras In advance; and on my left
stood a troop of springboks, with two leopards
Watching them from behind a bash. I rode
on, and soon fell in with a troop of herte-
beests, and, a little alter, with a large herd of
bine wildebeests and pallaht. I followed
these forsomo distance, when they wete re
inforced by two other herds of pallabs and
wildebeests. Three black rhinoceroses now
trotted across my path. Presently I sprang
from my hone, and fired right and left at a
princely bull bine wildebeest. He got both
balls, bnt did not fall; and I immediately
lost sight of him in the dense ranks of his
shaggy companions. The game increased as
we proceeded, nntil the whole forest seemed
alive with a variety of beantlfnlly colored
animals. On this occasion I was very unfor
tunate; I might have killed any qnanity of
game if venison had been my object: bnt I
was trying to get a few very superior heads of
some of tbe master backs of the pallabs. Of
these I wounded four select old backs hut in
the dost and confusion caused by the innu
merable quantity of the game I managed to
lose them all.
We had now ridden many miles from the
wagons; and feeling faint from want of food,
I dropped tbe chase in disgust, and, wlthont
looking at my compass, ordered the bnshman
to go ahead. My attention had been so en
grossed with the excitement of tbe pursuit,
and I had not tbs remotest idea of tbe course
I had taken and the whole country exhibited
such an aspect of sameness, that there was no
landmark or eminence of an; description by
which to steer, Having ridden ms
through the forest, I at length asked
man, in whom on snch occasions I generally
we discovered the spoor of the wagons, which
we reached after following it for about four
miles in a northeasterly direction,
Onr poor horses were completely exhausted,
and conld barely walk to tbe camp. I found
my wagons drawn up beside the strong loan
tain ol Lepeby, which, issuing from beneath
a stratum of while tnfous rock, formed an ex
tensive deep pool of pure water, adorned on
one side with lofty green reeds. This foun
tain was situated at tbe northern extremity
of a level bare vley. surrounded by dense
covers of the wait a-bit thorns. Snch a pe
culiar sameness characterized the country,
that a person wandering only a few hundred
yards from the fountain would ha7e consider
able difficulty in regaining it. It was night
when I reached tbe wagons, and two or three
cups of coffee soon restored me to my wonted
vigor.
On the following morning, from earliest
dawn until we trekked, whieb we did abont

ing the open space, and imparting to it the
appearance of a cattle fair; bine wildebeests,
zeoras, eassaybies, pallabs, springboks, etc,,
capered fearlessly up to the water, troop after
troop, within two hundred yards of us. In
former years a tribe of Cechuanas had fre-,
quented this fountain, and I beheld the skel
etons of many rhlnoceroaea and of one ele
phant bleaching in tbe snn; bnt the powerful
and cruel inatabiii had attacked the tribe,
and driven them to seek a home elsewhere.
I shot a pallab and a wildebeest, whsch we
secured behind tbe wag-ins. Abont 10 a. m.,
we inspanned, and witnin a mile of Lepoby
wo passed tbrongb another similar open vley,
containing a strong fountain of delicious
water. Wo continued our march till sun

thinly covered with detached treesand thorny
bushes, snd encamped In a sandy desert with

ABkidk in Bed.???The following description
of a Mohammedan Chinese wedding is taken
from a family letter recently received by
Caarles M. Howe ot this city, from his daugh
ter, Mrs. Grace L. Heberts, minionary at Kill,
gan. North Chinn:

Last week we attended a Moham

.and Mis. Dr. Mur ock were also there. The
wedding was on Wednesday. On Monday
onr teacher (the bridegroom to be) camo over
and brougut the invitations to us, and prom
ised to send a cart for ns Wednesday noon.
Then the question arose. What should we
send them for presents? We thought and
talked thd matter over, and finally decided
to send two Imndkerchiofs, some stereoscopio
views, one or two of my large views of the
Profile home, and universal history in Chi
nese by Mr. Sheffield. We sent them over
Wednesday morning, andjprepared ourselves
for tho wedding. At about 10:39 the cart
came, and wo went; they live only a short
distance from here. Wo found Dr. Murdock
and Miss Garretson already there. Wo seated
ourselves, and they immediately brought on

appeared quite confident, I allowed him to
proceed. At length he said that we had gone
a little too far u> the left, and led ma away
several miles to the right, which was wester
ly; whereas the wagena eventually proved to
be a long way to tbe east. I felt convinced
that we were wrong, and, reining np, a dis
cussion arose between ns, the btubmsn 11111
maintaining that we must ride west, while I
tru certain that onr coarse should be east. I
now adopted my own opinion, and, having
ridden rntny miles in an easterly direction,
we were at one lime close upon the wagons,
when the thick-headed bnshman declared
that if I persevered we ttionld never see the
wagons again, and I with eqnal stupidity
yielded to his advice, snd a southwesterly
course was once more adopted. Having rid
den for many miles, I again reined np, and
again told the buabman ire were wrong; upon
which he for the first time acknowledged that
be knew nothing at all about the matter, bat
stated it to be bis impression that we ought
to ride farther to the weir. My bead was so
confused that I lost all recollection of how
we bad ridden; and while I was deliberating
wbat I should do, I observed a volume of
smoke a long way to the north, which I at
once imagined bad been kindled by my fol
lowers to guide their lost muter to the
$Tth revived spirits, I stirred my jaded
steed and made for the smoke; bnt, alu! this
only served to lead me farther astray. After
riding many miles in that direction, I dis

thing would be the arrival of tbe bride. We
had to wait a long time, but were very pleu-
untly entertained by tho wife of Miss Garret-
-on's teacher, a brother of onr ,toucher. At
last tbe bride came, and wa were harried in
to a retired corner where we could us her
enter. Sbe was dressed throughout in red,
with gilt figures, the clothes being bound
quite tightly abont her. She had on a brass
(?) hat, from which wu suspended a little

ed by two womon, one on each side, and

reached the inner door than men and chil
dren jumped forwud and smashed in tho pa

a Kalgan custom, not Mohammedan, Then
the women shut the inner wooden shutters,
while they should reattire the bride. Tue

put on and her hair covered with ornaments.
Then the shatters were opened, and wo wire

her wedding day, bnt must stand or sit with
cut down eyes all day long to be used at.
Wo then came home to return in tbe even
ing. At 5 o'clock we went over again. We
were presently taken to a retired room n wbere
we could ue everything that went on. After
a little, our teacher, beautifully dressed, came
in and paid hia respects to the Mohammedan
