???if it waa not intended to do no???of making
few of the unfortunates in the gloomy, dirty
prison pen cvcu more miserable.
As early a* fi a. ra., daily from the various
station houses prisoners begin to wend their
way in company of blue-coated officers to Jef
ferson market. A doleful looking spectacle, a
majority of them present. Aa early ns U o???clock
the pen in the rear of tho court room was
crowded, aa it is nearly every soven da/?? of
the week. Tho room is a dirty looking, dark
concern, with an iron barred door. Two
benches only aru provided, and for hours, ow
ing to the limited space, tho foul place is
crowded, some standing, some sitting, others
pacing to and fro if they can obtain elbow
room; some cursing, some crying, singing or
moaning; some laughing, singing and making
merry over their misfortunes. Men well dress
ed; men costless and shoeless, some hatless;
some with blood? faces, black eyes or bloody
noses, victims of a fight or u policeman's club;
respectable men, vnguhonds, tramps, thieves,
burglars, old criminals ami new ones, also
miserable specimen* of fallen humanity whose
rags and bodies arc alive with vermin, and
here for hours daily huddled together like the
dogs in the pound.
It is a veritable pniidcinonimii otyin,wicked
