We don t care for argument*. We want facte and

terrible and growln gevll.J
Jim Jams.???In high-toned, polite champagne
circle*, when a worshiper at the shrine of
Piper Ileidsio and galvanized cider gets to the
point which is reached by prolonged tarrying,
and shows symptoms of mental aberration
that can only be accounted for by tjie fact that
his bibulous enthusiasm has carried him over
the margin which good judgment fixes even
in ia matter of this kind, considetate friends
let him down easy and ascribe the malady
softening of the brain or overwork, but some
times are sufficiently fiat-footed to denominate
it mania-potu. In what are termed the mid
dle and lower walks of life???particularly
the far west???the unfortunate who experiences
the same symptoms is said to have the jirn
jams. This hyphenated word suggests
something so expressive that it can only be
appreciated thoroughly by one who has had
pronounced first-class experience of snakes
his bolts. Did you ever have the jim-jams?
No? }Vell, I have a friend who passed
???through six days and nights in the enjoyment
of all that the suggestive term implies, and
his description of its various stages and
progress is so vivid that I am satisfied others
will find a passing interest in listening to the
record of his experience as I heard it from his
lips. He was one of the boys in the superla
tive degree. For ten years he had never
???drawn what might be called an orthodox sober
breath, for be religisusly made it a point never
to allow'himself to fully recover from one
drunk before starting another, lie had no
particular weakness when standing before the
bar, but took whatever happened to suggest
itself???sometimes whisky straight, sometimes
brandy sour, but more frequently during the
winter season, when with convival spirits,
making a specialty of hot Scotch, of which
???seductive boverage ho was passionately fond.
He assures me that ho frequently absorbed
twenty glasses of hot Scotch during a sitting
of three or four hours at auction pitch,
managing somehow to retain sufficient sense to
play his cards intelligently, and often escort
ing to their homes boon companions who hod
succumbed to half the bibulous aggravation to
which he had been subjected. The boys with
one accord pronounced him fire-proof, and his
reputation among the drinking portion ol tho
community was that of ???one who could send
most any of???em homo??? who had tho temerity
or ambition to accompany him on his
*???jamborees,??? ???drink for drink,??? as the phrase
went. Fut ton years of such vigorous wooing
of stimulants will tell on tho strongest consti
tution, and so it came to pass that my friend
.at that point began to realize that something
was wrong in his upper story???as ho forcibly
but intelligently expressed it,tho running gear
of his thinking trap was out of whack, hut
tho premonitory symptoms of jim-jams and
i increasing fo
j force of tho malady as it pro
presses are best described in my friend???s own
I^ba<f been on an unusually prostractcd jam
borcc, and it frightens me now when I recall
the immenso quantity of mixed drinks I
absorbed during its continuance. For about
three wooks I bad been industriously putting
???one drink on top of another, but
during odd ficeting intervals
partial sobriety seriously thought
of letting up and swearing off for a season.
One night while'taking a hand at sell out with
a party of congenial spirits, a shadow passed
swiftly before ray face, preceded by a peculiar
ly dull sensation in that portion ol the
-cranium which is. allotted by phrenologists to
the organ of veneration. Tho numbness (which
in the main very nearly expresses tho nature
of the sensation) from this point spread
gradually downward. Its progress was so
???alarmingly apparent to me that I hastily
made my excuses to the card party, bade
them good-night and repaired to my room,
hoping that an application of cold water and
a good night's rest might bring relief. Before
reaching noino tho numbness bad begun to
affect eyesight???to such an extent that ail
???objocto had to mo a shadowy, uncertain
appearance, and to my vision the letters in
the names of the streets on tho corners ran
together in such an unreliable, go-as-you-
f deas.i manner that 1 wouldn???t have known
he name of the thoroughfares by any
knowledge I gained from the sign. Arrived
at my room, f saturated a towel with ice-cold
water, enveloped my head with it, turned tho
light low, and retired. While walking along
tho street, when my sight began to bo effected,
several times a shadow seemed to Hit past me
to the right and left and sometimes directly
across my face???very similar to the flight of a
bat. Now,while lying on tho bed, this singular
experience was often repeated, the shadow
seemed to pass between my vision and tho
??eiling, completely obscuring it from view
for the instant. I was perfectly aware that
this was a vagary of a disordered brain, but
still hoped and believed that rest would briug
relief. Confident in this conviction, I en
deavored to compose myself to sleep, but the
numbuess increased rather than diminished,
the bewildering shadows continued to annoy
my vision, and I was soon convinced that
sleep, under such circumstances, was out of
the question* At last the uncanny thoughts
and feelings consequent upon my delirium
became too much for my nerves to stand, and
disturbed me to such an extent that # arose
and repaired to the nearest all night barroom,
hoping, amid the cheerful, convivial company
I was sure to find there, to get rid or the
oppressive sensations. I took a seat with a party
who were engaged in somegameof cards, an-.'
-endeavored to divert myself by watc jim
their play. While doing so I imagined l *.i
a monstrous rat scoot across the floor. Ta
sober second thought, which I was enabled t
evolve from my reasoning faculties by an ex
traordiuary exertion of will, demonstrated to
me satisfactorily the utter absurdity of such
an idea. 1 was pretty well satisfied that I was
in the early stages of the ???jim-jaina,??? and on
the impulse of the moment, realizing fully the
cause to which was attributable my deplorable
condition, firmly resolved that not another
drop of liquor of any description should pass
my lips as a beverage. Some of my intimate
friends who were in the barroom, and who had
noticed my s*
conversation
covered they, too. were satisfied that I was in
the early stage of the ???horrors.??? I had now
been without sleep for forty-eight hours, and
while my reduced physical condition (I
Weighed only eighty-five pounds), as well as
my mental disquietude, sadly demanded rest,
still 1 had not the slightest inclination to sleep.
The next day and night passed in a similar
way, and the fourth, fifth and sixth. At the
beginningof the fifth day I first experienced
the distress and suffering arising from loss of
sleep, but, in spite of ail efforts to compose
myself, not one moment???s slumber came to
my relief.
If any one had assured me that the sacrifice
??>f a hand or an arm would insure me a nap of
hfteen minutes??? duration, I would gladly have
tion, that, so long as I was in a barroom or
any other place where general conversation,
or singing, or general hilarity %vas in progress,
I was comparatively free lrotn the annoying
???presence* to whicn I have alluded, but the
moment I repaired to my room, turned the
light very low and strived to sleep, tho room
at once peopled (if I may be allowed that ex
pression; with grotesque and hideous shapes
that are not satisfactorily accounted for in any
work on natural history I over eucountered.
Tawny little devils, about three inches in
height, sat upon my shoulder* and peered into
my face with the most horrid grimaces. Every
now and then troops of them would rush pell-
mell down the length of my arm and make
marvelous leaps from the ends of my fingers,
vanishing, for tho time being, only to reap
pear in some other locality, having lost none
of their horrible and repellent ugliness dur-;
ing their temporary absence. Then strains
of music greeted my ears, as if rendered by a
Lilliputian brass band, and ranging myself
in bed and resting my body upon my loft arm,
I beheld a*multiiue of the tawny tribe march
