The nomination of flt. John was seconded by

be a candidate, and that he seconded the

Hon. Jaa. Black, of Pennsylvania.
At this atage of tho proceedinga Mr. Bab

McDonald, came to the platform and aaid Me-

He, Mr. Babcock, had presented the name and
it had been cordially received
by tho convention, but he was
satisfied that tho temper of tho convention and
tho interest of the cause demanded the with
drawal of Dr. McDonald's name. He there
fore withdrew it, and cordially seconded the
nomi nation of Ht. John. [Cheers.]
Mr. Pierce, of Pennsylvania, also withdrew
the nomination of Mr. Black, and that of Mr.
(Uewart was withdrawn by the Maine delega
tion, with the remark that Maine kept step t j

On the motion to suspend tho rules and
nominute St. John by acclamation, the ear
nest argument of a delegate that the affect of
(hat would be to stampede tho convention and
to leave its most important work—the plat
form—uncared for. Tho convention took a
recess until 3 p. m.
ST. JOHN NOMINATED.
Upon reassembling in the afternoon session,
the first businoss transacted was the call of the
roll of state* u|K>n the nomination, notwith
standing tho renowiil of the objection from
those delegate! who wished to get to work
a »on the platter m. Every vote was cast for
. John, and at tho conclusion of tho roll call,
