The first cost is but little greater than wood.and
the upkeep is next to nothing; the insurance is less;
the house will be cooler in summer and warmer
winter; the saving in fuel alone would pay the inter
est on the difference in cost.
Our Common Brick are being used in the erection of the fine
new building at the G. N. & I. College. Take a look at them, and

Under hie pillow in the same room the
detectives found 37 bogus quarters aud
at the city barracks the police discover
ed three counterfeit dimes.
The police and the United States au
thorities had been put on the scent of
the alleged counterfeiter by the com
plaints of a number of merchants who
had found that their cash drawers con
tained bad mouey.
The man arrested gave his name as
Rice, bnt later at his room letters wore
found that indicate hois William Meo"
gan, at one time of Uvica, and a mem
ber of the bricklayery union. Meegan
seems at ono time to have been an actor
and had advertised in Atlanta and
Macon papers for a young woman to go
out with him in a vaudevillt sketch.
There were several answers to these
advertisements.
The coins tiiat the man is supposed to
have turned out arc rather crude ex
amples. Those found in his bed were in
an unfinished state, being ragged about
the edge and apparently fresh from the
! die.

The most radical and most important
step which the Democrats have taken
is the proposal to remove the customs
import duties on sugar 'amounting an
nually to 152,000,000, and to make up
the deficiency in revenue by the exten
sion of the corporation tax to individu
als and co-partnerships having incomes
from bnsiness in excess of $6,000 an
nually. Buch incomes are to pay a di
rect tax of one per cent, on the excess
over $5,000, and the tax is estimated to
bring into the treasury between $60,-
000,000 and $60,000,000 annually. Rep
resentative Underwood, the Democratic
Chairman of the Ways and Means
Committee , claims that the removal of
the sugar tax will save the public an
annual burden of $107,000,000, being
tbe amount of the tax pins the annual
tribute exacted by the sugar trust in
high prices.
With regard to the extension of the
corporation tax, which really means
the imposition of a direct incomo tax,
Mr. Un erwood says that this special
tax will accomplish the same result as
would have been accomplished by an
income tax if it were within the power
of Congress to enact an income tax, so J
far as raising revanoe is concerned, hut
at the same time the bill keeps well
within the principles laid down by the
Supreme Court in its decision affirming
the constitutionality of the corpora
tion tax law.
It is believed that the measure will
pass both Houses. But that it is in
danger of a veto by the President. The
Democratic beet 6ugar interests of the
west are opposed to its enactment, but
some of tta • in urgent Republicans in
the Senate ar expected to line up in its
favor. Should u become law, and add
ing its expected yield to tho .f!P,000,000
direct taxat on levied upon oorporations,
it would moan a total of nearly $90,UOO,
000 direct taxation out of the budget of
$700,000,000 or $800,000,000 which must
be raised to support the government.

MONEY FROM 6AME LAW.

ceaaa, <fc.
Atlanta, March 8.—Tho state edu
cational fund will profit this year ts
the extent of about $12,000 from tbe
nea r game law. Its operation
brought in about $20,000 in all from
fioeuse and flues, bnt tbe cost sf
operation of the department runs to
something over $7,600.
In tho light of these figures the
first year of the dew law Is looked
upon as entirely suscesaful, aud it
is takeu for granted that the law will
be ratified by the coming session of
the legislature, with a few minor
amendments.
