Washington reporters say, prob
ably inccaurately, that President
Coolidge is “shocked” at the sugges
tion of $750,000,00 to make

A country that could give TEN

railroad receipts, and plan, wisely, to
cut $200,000,000 a year from corpo
ration taxes, need not shudder at the
thought of spending part of a billion

his youth “no one ever saw him

Mr. Darrow of the House Naval
Affairs Committee told President
Coolidge his friends “still hoped he
would be a candidate.” The Presi
dent replied: “I am afraid they will
have to be disappointed.”
Ihe-hard Coolidge enthusiasts will
find SOME comfort in that word
“afraid.” A man cannot help being
persuaded if arguments are good.
Suppose the President were con
vinced, as he may be, that his re- J

GOVERNOR SMITH VETOES
DOGS’ CROPPER EAR BILL
Albany, N. Y., April 16. (Auto-
castcr)—Governor Smith has vetoed
the Shonk bill, which would have
prohibited the exhibition of a dog
with cropped ears at a dog show
after next September.
“It is no more immoral to show
a dog at a dog show' because its ears
have been cropped that it would be to
show it at Fifth avenue or any other
place of public assemblage,” the Gov
ernor wrote in his veto memorandum.
He said he would have approved
the bill had it prohibited the posses
sion of dogs with cropped ears.

that she attempted suicide by jump
ing into the River Ammer. She was
aaved and suffered only a slight chill.
