LOCAL APPLICATIONS
The suffering man or woman is

agonizing, inflamed nerve, a pas

C. G. BOWERS CHOSEN
AS KEYNOTER
J.rk.on Day Speech Wir
Claude G. Bowers, an editorial
writer of a New York newspaper, has
been selected by the Democratic
National Commifee to deliver the
keynote, or opening address at the
forthcoming Democratic convention
at which the Democratic nominee for
president will be elected.
The selection of Bowers is due to
a great ex'.ent to a speech he made
at Washington ;.t the last Jackson
Day dinner, which fired the imagi
nation of his audience.
Not since William Jennings
Bryan’s “Crom <>f Gold" speech has
one address run hack and forth
through the Democratic party with
such approval. His words have caught
•he popular imagination and the
party leaders appreciated his power
of making clear fundamental issues
f.-r the coming campaign. Previous-
I ly Mr. Bowen hu been known :i« a
litcrarian and historian.
Now he has erne forth as n politi
cal orator of the first water. The
Jackson Day speech was carefully
constructed, with exceeding care
given to every detail of phrase and
thought.
The composition of ihe speech was
almost politically perfect. Its sub
ject matter was simple and intollig-

371.000 TONS RUBBER NEEDED
TO MEET DEMAND |
The demands of t h * world |
for rubber through products that are
indispensable to our present mode of
living, require 371,000 long tons <>f
the crude product to fill each year,
according to material survey engi
neers of The B. F. Goodrich Rubber
Company, Akron, Ohio.
Since rubber must be taken from
cert;: n tropical trees in the form of
latex, which is more than sixty per
cent water, it takes 332 1-2 million
gallons of the milky fluid to produce
the tonnage required to supply the
j rubber manufacturing industry just
in America.
The rubber latex or milk is not
. an emulsion as is commonly suppos
ed but a fluid in which, Goodrich
chemists say, are suspended miscros-
copic particles of solid rubber mat
ter. Their particles are ho numer
ous and their powers of adhesion arc
so great that one gallon of this
white rubber-tree sap contains enough
of the rubber globules to form a min-
| ute thread 372 miles long,
j On the rubber plantation the *ree
milk or latex is treated wi,h a dilute
| acid solution as noon as it is brought
j in by the tappers. The acid sen'- to
' dissolve the properties which hold the
I rubber particles suspended in the
fluid. This brings che rubber t- ihe
! surface where it can be skimmed off
1 just as cream is skimmed off of cow’s
I milk.
The value of the plantation rubber
| to the industry has been tremendous.
Scientific care of plantations and ex
tensive study of nits.hods for handling
the latex have produced a dependable
rubber which, Goodrich engineers say
has been n vital factor in improving
automobile tire quality. Compound

from these sources come practically
97 per cent of the crude rubber used

A buying preference of enormous proportions lifts
the Essex Super-Six far above the crossfire of com
petitive claims. It is the public itself which says the
finest things for Essex.
It is outselling all other “Sixes”—in many sections
by more than 2 to 1. And, with slight variations, this
preference is the nation ’..and the world’s.

Remember~
You can’t paint a house with applesaucel
“Cheap” paint is low-prioed-per-gallon, yes. But it isn’t cheap
on the wall. When you figure so-called “cheap” paint by the coat
of the job, it’s the most expensive you can buy. On the other
hand, fine old SWP House Paint saves you money every time.
Because “cheap” paint covers so stingily, more gallons am
needed on a job. Then it gives out so quickly that yon have
to pay the cost of repainting two, three, or even more time*
to SWP's once. And SWP gives you a rich, more beautiful job.
