UNION RECORDER, M'.LLEDGEVILLE, GA., JULY !•, 1*2®
TWO FREE GAMES—THE MERCH-
ANTS VS. THE PUBLIC—THE
RAILROADS VS. MOTOR
TRUCKS
My Dear Mr. Merchant and The Pub
lic.
You a«-c cordially invited to atf'-nd
the above free game and b; ing all «•?
your friends out. This game is not
only being played in Milledgeville.
but is b-'ng played almost through
out the country, and it depend- n
your fair and impartial judgment a-
to which side should be the winner in
both the following games. Daily pa
pers and also our local newspaper*
viz: the Union Recorder and the Mil-
ledgeville Times have editorially call-
id the public's attention from time
to time, of the importance of spend
ing their money with their home
merchants. It haw not only been
said by our papers, but by other
papers elsewhere.
Their advices has been sane and
constructive and for the benefit «t
all whom these papers serve. Not
only has it been strewed by our local
newspapers but has been discussed by
our merchants and citizens on every
buai
nd in
much .
in behalf of our good merchants of
Millcdgeville. who daily strive to car
ry a complete line of the best goods
that can be bought for the money
and sold as cheaply .as you can get
them in other cities. Our merchants
are courteous .painstaking and are
willing to serve you ut anytime and
will do you a favor when called on
and W’ll meet you "half way" on any
proposition. Will your out of town
merchant do that? When you need
something real bud who do you call
on? Your home merchant will extend
you credit when same is needed, he
pays your city a license to do business
therein. He pays your City and
County a Tax to help maintain our
local Government and our Public
School System, which our children
benefitw there from. What do your
out of town merchant do? When you
need to raise any money for any pur
pose, charitable or otherwise, do you
go to Mr. Buck & Rattler Co., of
Iwont, Doit.,? Do you go to Mr. Vil-
inky & Stein Co., of Tight, Wad?.
No, you go to Mr. Merchant of Mil-
ledgeville.
Now when you have some cash you
wish to spend for the things you need
why not go to Mr. Merchant of Mil-
ledgeville?
Now Mr. Merchant, I think the
public should referee the above game.
There will be another game that fol
lows the above, Mr. Merchant of Mil-
ledgcville. You being men of good
business judgment and are always
willing to be impartial in your decis
ion on matters of importance. So
personally 1 am willing for you to
referee this game while the public
looks on.
The Second Game Follow.
For the past few years, especially
during 1927-28. the railroads of the
nation have called your attention,
thru the prers, of the inrods the
motor busses and freight trucks have
cut into their revenue. I am not pre
pared to tell you of the enormnu*
sum, even the class one railroads have
lost to motor transportation. But it
has be
* had t
istblo
that
curtail expe
rder t
thei
for you, brought in from another
city. Your railroads and express
company needed that *reight very
badly to help pay their taxes to your
city and county, also to help pay the
salaries of these fifty employees, so
they can pay you their bills and buy
more goods from you. Mr. Merchant
how much taxes doe* the motor
freight trucks pay you- city and
county? Mr. Merchant how much
money does the employees of the
motor freight truck compnay spend
with you annually?
I dare say that one employee of
cither railroad that serves you, spends
more money with you in ore month
than all the employees of the motor
freight company does in one year.
this business from the --ne that daily
adds to your bank account, so it
will be necessary for the railroad- to
continue to cut off the employees
that are spending their money with
YOU, and give it to .a concern to take
out of your town, and then continue
to ask the people to spend their
money at home with you? You have
asked us to spend our money with
ployees that have been more loyal
to the merchants of Milledgeville
than the Railway and Express em
ployees and in return for their hu-i-
ness, would it not be a good business
policy for the march arts of Milldt-ge-
ville to favor them with their freight
and express business?
Then the Railroads and Express
will be able to keep us on their pay
roll and we can stay in your city and
continue to give you our busine c -.
This employee has done business
with practically all of you, and has
spent with you around $15,000 of
his salary drawn from the railroad.
How much has the employee of the
motor freight company spent with
you? The Railroads pay your claims
for loss and damage to freight, is the
Motor Freight Co., able to pay your
claims in case of heavy loss to your
goods. They are not regulated by
the Interstate Commerce Commission
and are not compelled to do anything
they don't wane to do. Mr. Merchant
you are the referee to this game, will
give your own customers a fair
and impartial decision?
