The fact that the inhabitants of
Afghanistan revolted recently when
King Amanullah, returning from Tur
key, sought to reform hia people
through an immedate modernization,
has a significance.
Hia plan was to democratize Parlia
ment, establish modern schools, for
bid polygamy and emancipate women.
When the members of Parliament
arrived at Kabul, he presented them
with frock coats and felt hats. The
wearing of these was to be compul
sory and he advised the shaving off
of beards. They accep.ed this much
(without enthusiasm but indignation
arose when the queen demanded that
all the ladies remove their veils.
The Afghani ana could see the
ideals of reform as a possible thing to
be looked forward to in some dim
future perhaps, but recognized a
hypocracy in the adoption of Western
garments as an outward symbol of an
inward change of attitude toward the
world. They had not been to Turkey
and not sharing the king’s vision, did
not care to have drastic changes in
their mode of living.
King Amanullah erred, as many re
formers have done in their eagerness
to reach the final goal, by an im
patience which hindered him going
step by step, building a bri.ige over
the gap between the old and the new.
Many peopie in life become dis
couraged in building toward their
dream—whether that dream be indi
vidual achievement or group achieve
ment—because they do not remember
that the finished task is not half so
important as the process.
Amanullah might or rrgiht not ap-'
predate, at this time, the parable of,
the new wine which was put into old ]
bottles and Christ’s words, “No man
having drunk old wine straightway j
desireth new, for he saith, the old is I
GOSSIP
(By Mary Roby)
There is good gossip and bad
gossip. But which is the most pre
valent? Which is tho most popular?
As long us the world stands and peo
ple are able to talk, they arc going to
talk about things which most interest
them. There are unsual people who
do the usual thing or usual people
who do unusual things! Some people
sit back and talk; others rock for
ward, put heads together, and talk.
But they both talk about other peo
ple gossiping. If that is not a "chip
off the gossiping block,” what is? It
is natural that unusual incidents
should happen in the course of life.
Just co natural is it for those interest
ed to talk together about such an
incident and give their opinions, then
to hurry to tell friends. There is an
opportunity open for someone in each
gossiping circle to say something
good, to commend the gossiping circle
to say something good, to commend
tlie gossiped for some trait: in other
words, to make the circle on
