Atlanta, Ga., March . 13.—Follow
ing announcement Friday of the sale
of its gas properties in Georgia, in
order that the company might con
centrate its efforts to more intensive
development of its electric iight and
power service, 'the Georgia Power
Company has announced plans for
construction near Atlanta of a steam
electric generating plant which will
completely dwarf all other steam
plants in the state and will be ex
ceeded in capacity among all eleetric
gene rating plants in Georgia only by
the Tallulah Falls hydroelectric plant
of the same company.
The new steam plant will be of
100,000 horsepower capacity, by
comparison with the Tulluinh Falls
plunt which has a capacity of 108,-
OdO horsepower. It will be several
times larger than any other steam
' electric generating plant now in
operation in the state.
The new plant, when completed,
. will be large enough to supply nil
of the electric needs of Atlunta und
its metropolitan district, even if all
other sources of power supply should
be
off.

interconnected transmission lines
from the large mine-mouth steam
generating plants of the Alabama
Power Company, but the new gen

be the first major steam power de

Aside from the primary objects of
protection to the Atlanta metropoli

that the improvement in efficiency
of s earn electric power plants and
their reduction in capital cost, due
to the huger units now available, has
been so great during the past twelve
years that today only the most favor-*
ably located hydroelectric projects
can be developed as economically as
steam electric plants.
The new plant will be equipped
with a single steam turbin generator
of 100,000 horsepower capacity, the
largest single generating unit in
state and one of the largest in the
south. It will have two large boilers
which will deliver the steam against
the blades of the turbines at a pres
sure of 450 pounds to the square
inch. An idea of the magnitude of
the new station is given by the fact
that the boilers will be capable of
delivering the steam at this pressure
and at a temperature of 725 de
grees at a rate of 450.000 pounds
per hour.
