The United States Department of
Agriculture is attempting to develop
., new race of superior honey bees.
SpecialUts in the government bee
laboratory, near Washington, are
testing and attempting to improve in-
- Miiiwition of queen bees devised
within the last few years in this coun
try and abroad. Once such techni
que is made more practicable they
will assemble specimens of the more
important races of honey bees and
will make innumerable crosses in an
effort to combine the desirable
ebaracterstica of all of them
The bee breeders hope their work
will go even farther than this by
producing new types with the de
sirable traits developed to a greater
degree than in any races now known.
First, bee keepers would like bees
with considerably larger honey
stomach/ so they can carry more ne
ctar on each trip. They hope for a
bee with a larger thorax and a great
er wing expanse so it can fly under
more adverse conditions and carry
heavier loads.
For northern climates a bee that
can fly in cooler weather is sought.
A longer tongue capable of sucking
nectar from tho depths of long tub
ed would be welcome. A race that
would breed rapidly but not swarm
excessively and would be immune to
contagious disnases is another hope
of the breeders. And last, but not
least, a gentle, sociable honey bee
with a good disposition is more to the
hearts of the men who work with the
bees.
“The honey bee has been longer
in man’s service than mose domestic
animals,” James I. Hamblcton, head
of the government bee laboratory,
says, “but the bee cannot be classed
as a domestic animal. It leaves for
the woods on the slightest provoca
tion nnd is just well satisfied
there an ever. We believe we can
really domesticate the honey bee and
can make bee breeding os profitable
to the hee keeper as careful breeding

When Senator Harris was a
member of the Sta»o Senate, he was
the author of the measure statute
prohibiting lobbying, that law re
quiring every Jndlviaual going be
fore the Legislature or committee
members thereof to register. Mr.
Slaton repeatedly appeared before
Committees of the llouso and t?**n-
ato, speaking vehemently against
measures nnd bringing the power
and influence of himself and his
wealthy connections against nunv
proposed nets, providing means
carrying on state Institutions, the
payment of pensions to Confederate
soldiers and salaries of tenchers in
clo today of Georgia listening to
the pitiful appeals of these heroes
begging for tho pittance of their
little pensions before they die. Who
can regard without shame the brav
men and women who have taught
the great youth of this state, their
salaries now past due. running into
millions, and the Stato Insane and
influence ho possibly could to de
feat every measure providing
means for these purposes.
In his speech last Saturday he
admitted that he had 'appeared"
beforo some committees of the
House and Senate, but he failed to
Htate that he never registered or
let it become known that he was

estates like his own family inter

deny the well-known fact that not
once but many times he has ap
peared to defeat measures for the
common people of Georgia, using
what ability he has to take care
of his pet interests in legislation
affecting the progress and highest
interests of the common poople of
Georgia.

that money would not stand in the

does not point with pride to one
single achievement of his four

In the Sunday statement of Sla

language is used:
“There are more ways of buying
votes than one. For twelve years
Senator Harris, from the privileges,
perquisites and power of bis office,

these favors. Is Senator Harris in a
