BALDWIN COUNTY HAS I BANKHEAD PREDICTS
SPLENDID 1935 CROPS 13 CENTS FOR COTTON |
Bfsl Outlook in Years for Good Crop Shortage is Expected to Cause
Harvest. Farmers are Optimistic. Drain on The American Pool. j
The best crops in Baldwin county
in years, is the general opinion of
those interested in agricultural de
velopment in this section as they
pass judgment on the 1935 farm
outlook in the county. Extremely hot
weather is routing the boll weevil
and with its continuation for another
week farmers will have nothing to
fear from invasion of the pest.
Rain in some sections of the coun
ty this week came to the aid of cot
ton and corn, both of which were
beginning to suffer for lack of mois
ture, and in the various communi
ties fanners have welcomed the
timely showers.
Young com in particular has been
helped by the rah. this week, and
with- more seasonable weather a
good crop is anticipated.
Watermelons will be loaded by
the first of next week. The melons
are government inspected and sold
to buyers at the loading point. Only
fair prices are being received as the
market has been glutted by the early
ripening of the fruit in other sections
of the state.
A prediction of 13 cents a pound j
cotton this year was made in a state- j
ment by Senator Bankhead, demo- j
crat, of Alabama.
He said the world crop promised
to be sufficiently short to cause a
drain on the American pool co*ton I
which, he added, cannot be moved :
at less than 12.75 cents a pound.
Only farmers have the right to sell J
American cotton below the com-.
modity credit corporation loan of 12
cents a pound, he said.
