H 1 had been a perfect hero of romance.
Among those who extended their patron
age to me 1n the kindest and most grati
fy mg manner, was the gallant old Mar
quis of ll.trdhoifln. During mv stay in
England, which was limited 'to three
weeks, 1 was almost a constant guest at
Ins table. lUs family circfc consisted nt
that time—ns his sons were both ahroad
of two lovely duttghtt rs; indeed, 1 may
say, that at die permd I speak of, now
eight and twenty years ago, they were the
most beautiful and fascinating worm n I
had ever seen. Perhaps you may ima
gine that the superiority of their rank hud
something to do in bringing me to tins
judgment of their charms; hut circum
stances have since occurred, which in my
eyes at least, have deprived them of that
superiority, and my opinion remains un
changed. Os the two, the Lady Am.ibt I
,a Wi v s n, y favorite. There was so much
playful ease, at the same time so much
dehente propriety, in whatever she said
or old, that while she immediately at
traded the affection, she as surely retains
ed the admiration and esteem.
In this family I passed the happiest
hours «t mv life. There was hut one
drawback to mv felicity. The Marquis
was an officer of the old school, and next
to being unflinching in the field, he risk
ed among the soldier’s virtues ti e being tin
flinching over the bottle. He attached,
such importance to this accomplishment,
that I plainly saw he estimated a man’s
courage and strength ol nerve, in the x
nct r it ‘" of his strength of stomach, 'i o
this failing of his Lordship I made myself
a martyr. In spite of my wound, which
■ was now indeed nearly w< 11, J f, lt myself
irresistibly eaJlcd on to drink. Whether
or not my behaviour in this respect was in
flueneed hv the Marquis’s declaration,
that lv would consider it a personal in
sult for any gentleman to leave his table
in a condition which enabled him to
walk, I will not styr,- hut Ins Lordship
was known to be an inimitable shot, and
on occasions of that sort, seldom to he
worse than his word. My mornings
w ere happy, or if unhappy, only disturb
edfl my fears of the evening’s debauch.
J he drawing room, and the fascinat
ing society of the ladies, you will perhaps
imagine, were a sufficient compensation
far any sufferings. With me, indeed, it
was so. Every time I was admitted into
their presence, I found the Lady Armi
h< lla’s influence gaining the ascendency
over mv heart. I do not mean that the
eonquest the made over my affections was
the result of her arts, or even her wishes.
Far from it. I saw, that even if fortune
favored me in future, ns much as she had
hitherto done: ave, if 1 raised myself to
an equal rank with the object ot mv ad
miration—mv suit would still be hopeless,
for though I perceived tint her heart wns
untouched, I knew, alas! that In r hand
was engaged. The Honorable Henry
I- it ■/. D’Angle, heir to an immense fortune
ami dukedom, was her affianced hus
band, and 1 have often thought, since the
period 1 mention, that it was little else
than madness to yield to the delicious en
chantment of those interviews and con
versations, when I was aware that I wn*
only nursing aflame, which in all proba
bility, would consume me. However I
found resistance to my passion impossi
ble, and heart and soul, I gave myself
up to the lovely and accomplished Atma
hella. Our mornings were often employ
ed m shopping: on these occasions, the
Marchioness, out of consideration of my
wound, allowed mo a seat beside her in
the carriage. Fit/.D’Angle, who, though
an intolerable Puppy, was handsome m
person, and a perfect horseman, usually
accompanied us on a spirited Arabian.—
I shall not say, when in order to show
his dexterity in maintaining his seat, lie
made the animal rear in the most terific
manner, how certain tremors ran through
mV heart, tts I sat in momentary expect
ati..a that the charger, in its descent,
would put its iron foot through the car
riage window, and demolish my unfortu
nate head. I remarked, that during these
displays, the lovely cheek ofLady Auna
betbi never underwent the slightest
change; and I confess, that without al
lowing myself to inquire into the cause, I
rejoiced in perceiving her indifference.
