THU SOUTH Kit N SCHOOL JOHN N AT.
i UNDER this itle, it is proposed to publish, injthis city,
! a Mont hl y Paper, devoted entirely to the cruse of gen
eral Education; Its object will be—
1. To awaken a deeper and more general interest in
I the subject of Education.
: ~2. To aid in devising and recommending some more
practicable and efficient means of extending the bless
ings ol education to all classes and conditions of our
white population in the South.
3. To discuss all questions relating to Schools ; such
as—the qualifications of Teachers ; the principles and
modes of organization and discipline; the most approv
ed and successful methods of teaching ; text, books ;
the co-operation ofParents and Teachers ; the con
struction and 1* uniture of school houses; the compara
tive merits of private and public schools, &c.
It will thus furnish a suitable medium through which
Teachers, and the friends of education generally, may
communicate with each other and with the public upon
all topics connected with that subject.
The value, not to say necessity, of such a publication
must bo obvious to every one, more especially as there
is no periodical ol this character in the Southern
States, so lar as we are apprised. And we are particu
larly desirous it should find circulation among our
country population, as their condition and wants will
meet with special attention in its columns.
The paper will be issued in monthly number*, of
sixteen pages each, Royal Octavo, neatly printed and
carefully mailed. Price, One Dollar per annum, in
variably in advance. No subscription will be received
for less time than one year, and no name entered as a
subsriber until the money is received.
Advertisements in any way connected with the ob
jects of the paperwill beinserted atthe usual price, for
cash in advance.
Thetirj number will lie issued in January 1553.
Unl.ess Providentially prevented, the paper will be
published for one year at least ; so that no one need
hesitate to forward his subscription at once for that
period.
We earnestly ask the aid of all friends ofgeneral ed
ucation, particularly in Georgia and Alabama, in sus
taining and circulating the work. Several of the Or
dinaries in Georgia have volunteered in advance to act
as Agents. We respectfully soilcit the same favor of
all. We shall bo p eased to receive as many names as
possible by the 15th of January, in time for the first
issue.
All communications should be addressed postage
paid to the Southern School Journal, Columbus, Geor
gia.
At the solicitation of many friends, the undersigned
has consented to undertake the Editorial department of
the above paper. Ife does so with unfeigned difference
• of his own ability in this untried sphere of labor. But he
is cheered by assurances ol aid from able hands. Hesoii
cist contributions to its columns from the able and ex
perienced friends of the cause throughout the South. —
Let them be well studied, plainly written, briefand to
the point. He will be much gratified to receive cor
rect accounts of the state of education in the different
counties, as well as the different sections of the coun
try. These will furnish imporiant facts for our work.
