Affairs in Washington City. OFFICE-SEEKERS AND APPOINTMENTS. Washington, March 12. The office-seekers are grumbling loudly at the deliberate manner in which their claims are considered. So far as is mown nothing has vet been determined on, and all reports to the contrary are mere guesswork, or feelers. The president said to day that it would be impossi |,]t.to take up the New York appointments even for consideration before the middle of next week. . The Tehuantepec question will come up eith er on Tuesday or Wednesday. A great many w hi* Senators have left, and it is feared a quo rum°cannotbe kept after next week. It is understood that the able Commissioner o ftho Land Office—John Wilson—will remain in office for the present at least. There is a strong feeling in favor of retaining him altogeth er, as he never was a politician. Major [Jobbie can get the First Assistant Post master Generalship ; but his friends, believing that the duty is too arduous, wish him to be “-4Sixth Auditor. ” The following candidates are favorably spoken of; some of them may be considered as about certain : Mrj Wheeler, of North Carolina, for Sixth Au ditor. Hon. E. B. Dean, of Wisconsin, Second-As sistant Postmaster General. H. H. Heath, of Washington, Treasurer of the United States. Hon. A. W. Buel. of Michigan, Charge to Ber lin A rumor that parties arrived yesterday and deposited $53,000 with Corcoran & Riggs, to further the interests of a certain gentleman tor the New York Custom House, has caused con siderable commotion in the New York delega tion “f office seekeis. Ex President Fillmore will not leave Wash ington until Monday, Mrs. Fillmore being un well. Important Trial.— We; learn that Roberts and Copen haven, two ot the men concerned in the robbery of Mr. Jackson, of Pike co. >rere s ntenced to t/.e Penitentiary last week at Coweta Superior Court. The ormer. on two indictments, for 14 years, the latter for nine teen years. It was thought by our informant that Roberts would be sentenced on another indictment 7 years more, making in all 2i years. The trial of the others concerned, was proceeding when our informant left.— Milledge* ville i a per. Proposed New Couvtv,—We learn that quite a strong feeling exists among the citizens of the 3d 7th and 12 h districts of Baker, and por tions of the 4th, 6ih and i3th ot Early in avor of forming anew county. A meeting has been called tMilforlon the 3d Saturday in this month to ake the subject into consideration, when an opportunity will be affordeJ for all in terested to give their views on the subject. We have heard Spring Creek suggest'd as the Western boundary ot the proposed co inty, although we presume this question, as well as others that may arise, will be determined by the wishes of those residing n ar the proposed boundary. <) r western friends re comrnenc ing in season, and we have reason to believe \iil moke strenuous exertions to carry their project through the next Legislature.— Albany l(X riot * i- 7 peri*. * “dow is it,” said a gentleman to Sheridan, “that your name has not an O to it ; 3’our fam ily is Irish, and no doubt illustrious “No fam ily has a better right to an O than our family,” said Sheridan, “for we owe everybody.” Baltimore, March 14.—The Bridge at Cohoes, near Albany, and the Saratoga Railroad Bridge, have both been burnt by incendiaries. “Sir,” said a pompous personage, who under took to bully an editor, “do you know that I take your paper ?” ‘l’ve no doubt you and > take it/ replied the man of the quill, ‘for several of my honest subscribers have been complaini lg lately about their papers being missingin the morning.” Serious Mortality - . —Samuel H. Porter, esq., of Wilmington, N. C„ has lost in the course of a few weeks, ten valuable young slaves at Point w Peter, by a disease resembling pneumonia. They were taken sick.iu suceessioti&died after a brief j illness. The negroes were hearty and healthy up to the contracting of the disease which hur ried them off. ISear Weldon, Mrs. A. Powell, her son-in law, Mr. Walker, and a Mr. Walker, all residing in the same house, all died within I two days of each other, of the same disease. Death of Dr. A. B. Arnold.— We learn, with much regret, that this distinguished and useful physician, died suddenly at his residence in Lowndesville, on last Thursday evening. But a short time before his death, we are informed, he was sitting upin company with several young friends, who went for the purpose of serenading him, but were invited into the house tint he might hear the music more distinctly. A few moments after they withdrew, he retired to bed he breathed hi3 last. When found by his wife, who followed him a short time after he retired, he was struggling in the agonies of death, The friends who left him had proceeded to a neighboring house, and ere the performance of the second piece they were playing, had end ed, the intelligence of his death was communi cated to them. “Veril v, in the midst of life we are in death.” —Anderson Gazette. n~H\T ARDEN!
