A Man Killed by his Wife. —We regret to learn that on Sunday evening the Ist inst., Wi ley Hodman, of Emanuel county, was killed by his wife. The facts, as we have them from a gentleman of that county, seem to be as follows : Hodman bad been at some of the neighboring dram-shops during the day, and had become very much intoxicated ; he started for home, and arrived late in the evening: he took his gun and shot a dog lying ia the yard, at which his wife made some remarks : he then turned to her ! and commenced abusing and cursing her, swear- j ing that he would kill her, and picked up his gun and attempted to shoot. She run and he after her, he threw the gun at her, then took up a stake some eight or nine feet long, pursued her, and coming up with her, knocked her down. After recovering enough to rise, he still thump ing her, she drew a pistol and shot him in the breast, be then drew his knife, she ran again, he | her and continued the pursuit till he fell “from exhaustion ; he lived but a short while af- | ter he fell, but became more composed and sober j before he died.v Such is the statement we have j of this sad transaction; the parties, it is said, have not lived very pleasantly together. Hoffman was a drinking man, and frequently ! in his cups. Mrs. Hoffman gave herself up to j the officers, and after an examination before Jas. M. Tapiev, a Justice of the Peace, was put under bonds for appearance at the Superior Court of that County. —SandersviUe Georgian. [From the Constitutionalist ] LaGrange, May 10, 1853. Mr. Editor :—A fire broke out in this town between 1 and 2 o’clock this morning. It was first discovered in the kitchen attached to the Union Hotel, owned and occupied by Messrs. Bradfield & Ratlin. It soon communicated to the Hotel and there being a number of board ers in the house, caused a scene of consider able bustle, and I am sorry to say that but little was saved excepting the baggage of the board ers. No insurance. 1 The flames soon communicated down through j the whole range of buildings, (which were of .wood,) destroying the entire south side of the j Public Square. The remaining sufferers were as follows : Law office, occupied by B. II; Bigham, Esq. Next came the Bookstore of Mr Robert Rich- | ards; stock about $7 0J0; insurance $3,000, in the Mutual office. Then came a Bakery and Grocery, kept by Mr Niramet; next was a watchmaker; next was the dry goods store kept by Mr. Lewis Hines. The sock of goods were principally saved, but much damaged by the hasty removal, as they were compelled to be tumbled out in the shortest possible man- j ner. Mr Richards received considerable dam age to his stock of books, which, i think, will be covered by his insurance, I can learn of no other insurances on the buildings, except the Hote'. It belonged to Bingham & Culbertson. it is supposed to be the work ofan incendiary, as the fi.e was all out when Mr Raglin went to bed—he having examined the premises, and there being two or three unsuccessful attempts previous. This being court week, the whole court yard is strewed with the wreck saved, and the owners endeavoring to assort and car ry off then* property. Bishop Soule. Mr. Editor —On Sabbath, the 3d of April,we had the pleasure of hearing the venerable Bishop i Soule, of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, preach in Wesley Chapel, San Francisco. As the many friends of the Bishop, both here and in the Atlantic States, would be pleased to hear ot him, we take pleasure in saying that lie is in good health for a man of his age, and still possesses in ail eminent degree those extraordinary powers of mind and energy of thought which character ized iiis more palmy days. The Bishop’s theme on the occasion, was the conversion ot a sinner to God—cause of joy among the angels in heaven. This subject he treated in a plain, forcible style, setting forth the practical truths contained in the text. — Chris tian Observer. To Professor Holloway : .Sir —Your pills and Oin.menl have stood the highest on our list.of Proprietary Medicines tor some years. A customer, to whom I can refer for any enquiries, desires me to let you know the particulars of her case. She had been troubled for years with a disordered liver and bad digestion.
