The Tri-weekly times and sentinel. (Columbus, Ga.) 1853-1854, May 21, 1853, Image 3
!;> i >inrgtj to Copciiliflgcn to his couch
;uid pillow, while he went to his sanctum, and
spent his midnight oil writing some hail dozen
notices ot his guest—a rousing partisan puff’
for his own, sneet, oneor two in modified for form ;
the Press, and still others for the op- ;
position papers, who could not refuse a proses- j
sional brother the favor of a moderate notice of i
tiie departure of his “friend,” for a responsible I
diplomatic post. After an early breakfast the j
next morning, he called again on the Hon. the :
Charge to Copenhagen, whom he found pacing :
rapidly up and down one of tlie upper halls of
the Astorclad in morning gown, smoking cap ;
and slippers—a look of profound meditation
upon his brow—a large roll ot hastily opened |
morning newspapers under his arm, and under
the'other a snuffv little boy of some eight or i
ten summers, who was making desperate hut j
ineffectual efforts to keep pace with the long
strides of his paternal parent.
morning, Mr. ,” was the salutation
of Ti iend L.
“Ah ! Good morning, Mr. L —very glad to ;
see you ; have been much perplexed a bout a lit- I
tie matter of which I have been thinking this j
morning, and would like to have your I
advice.”
“Certainly—certainly. Sir. I am honored by j
vour condescension. I notice you have the
morning papers.”
“Yes Sir ; and I am really very much in- i
debted to your kindness for the notices you have !
made of my appointment. Speaking of the j
papers brings to mind exactly the subject 1
have been thinking of. Now, Mr. L., you j
know that 1 have been appointed Charge to Cos ;
peuhngen. Well, it’s a long way off and 1 sup- j
pose 1 ought to try to keep posted up relative j
to affairs in the United States, even if I am not j
in the country. Mr. L , if you was charge j
to Copenhagen, would you take-a paper ?”
“Fake a paper!” exclaimed our horrified L. i
“Certainly, I’d take a dozen. At any rate, l*d j.
one of each party, and one neutral news-j
paper” j
“f had come already pretty nearly to the .
conclusion that I should have to take a paper. !
Which one would you advise?” i
L. here happened to think that perhaps his !
new acquaintance had the misfortune to be very j
poor, anti could not do more in the newspaper j
way than he had suggested ; he accordingly told ,
him that if he could only take one, it had better j
be the morning ,as that would be likely to j
give hitn the most general idea of the progress I
of affairs at home.
“Just the conclusion I had come to exactly.
What is the subscription to the Weekly paper,
Mr. L?”
L. now began to enjoy it. The idea of a for
efgn Charge “posting himself” thoroughly by
taking a single weekly newspaper, was rather j
too ludicrous a joke not to make its markon his ‘
risibles- Siill he maintained his outward grav- ‘
ity, told the price and as his friend assured him
.that his time was incessantly occupied in making
necessary to his proper appear- j
ante as Charge at Copenhagen, L. volunteered
to step around to dlie office and subscribe for j
the paper—his friend handing him the money for
the purpose. Having accomplished the errand
he returned to the hotel in company with some j
of the gentlemen of the supper party of the pre* j
vions e who called to pay their respects |
ami take leave of the Charge whom they met j
near the foot of the stairs. Mr. L. approached !
him; stated that he had ordered the paper, and I
proffered the receipt therefor, on which laid I
fifty cents in small coin—the change of the !
piece advanced for the subscription price.
“Much obliged—extremely obliged to you
Mr. L. for all your kindness,” said the Charge
to Copenhagen, as he dextrously took the re
ceipt, sliding the change into L’s. hand.
“Here’s your change,’’ said Mr. L.
“Never mind that, never mind that, my dear
sir,” replied the Charge to Copenhagen, with
the most simple-hearted gravity. “Keep that
my dear sir for your trouble ! Good morning,
gentlemen!” So saying he turned on his heel
and ran up stairs, leaving L. astonished in the
%i)idst of a circle of his friends, whose boister- j
ous peals of mirth almost shook the solid col- j
uinnsof of the substantial Astor.
If you ever happen to meet Buchnan, (who j
never would believe that this story of his friend j
was not a little exaggerated,) and would like a l
little sport, just ask him if the late “Consul
at Copeunagen,’’ is to be his Secretary oi Le

r l o Dr. J. C. Ayer, &c.,
Dear Sir: We have the pleasure to report on your ship- |
ment of Cherry Pectoral to our house, the whole quantity
sold, and a pressing demand for more, which must await j
the arrival of further supplies. Its success in curing diseases
ofthe lungs, and its consequent notoriety, has excelled any !
medicine ever used in this country. Most of our remedies j
here are imported from England, and some of them arc |
rich and valuable ; but no product of medical skill from that ;
or any other quarter has ever won so fully the confidence of
our population as this beautiful preparation of yours.
The article lias attracted particular attention among our |
most distinguished citizens, Iroin the fact that General Bul
nes, President of the Republic, and the highest officer in
the State, was cured of a severe and dangerous affection of I
the lungs, by its use. He allows us to send his name, and I
wishes to add the acknowledgments of gratitude for his |
relief.
