A nice question. —'l'he whig papers appeal to ie<iiviiieci in opinion upon this question—wheth er the whig party has been rendered iiupopui ar by the principles it cherishes, or, on the contra iv, whether tiie conduct of the party inis n< t made its principles odious to the country ? The New York Tribune maintains the truth of the latter proposition, and says that it has no doubt that tbe destruction of the party would be im mediate! f followed by the triumph of the prin ciples embraced in its creed. Good arguments can Ire adduced to prove either branch of the proposition. ‘Hie party lias been guilt y of so many rascalities as to in jure its iniiuenee in behalf of its principles, while “the latter have been of such a character as to stand a great deal in the wav of the success of the organization. is. difficult to say which has been the greater element of weakness.
