New You*, June 18. j The boiler of a looomotive engine on the Railroad near the Susquehanna, exploded yesterday, killing eleven persons and seriously wounding several others. It is supposed that some four or five persons have been blown into the river. ADDITIONAL PARTICULARS. Susuuehanna, June 17. The boiler of engine No. 58, which was pushing a heavy freight train upgrade, when about half a mile east of Suaquehanna, oo the 16th inst., at 4 o’clock P. : M., exploded, instantly killing, burning and scalding a ‘ large number of person*. Five are known to have been instantly killed, among ; whom was the engineer, Mr. Arnold. Two others were so much injured that it is doubtful whether they will survive till m >rning. The son of the engineer was very much burned and si-alded, an I, it is thought, received some internal inju ries. Three others are known to have been blown into the river, and as others are missing, it is thought they shared the same fat*. Fire near .Montreal—Meeting of Irish Catholics* Montreal, June 15. The machine shop and foundry of Mr. Rodden were j burnt last night in Griffinstown. Parliament is prorogued *ntil the 23d of July. A reward of S2OO is offered by the authorities for the apprehension of the ruffians ooncerned in smashing the windows of the churches on Sunday evening. A meeting was held yesterday in front of St. Pat- ; rick’s Church at which a very large number of Catbo- 1 lies attended. Speeches were made depreciating the conduct of ; those engaged in the riots, and a series of resolutions ! were parsed relative to the future maintenance of the ! peace of the city, and the apprehension es the parties who were engaged in the recent disturbance. Mexico and Spain. Washington, June 18.—Letters from Cuba state •"jf-iiively that Santa Anna and Spain have agreed to 1 • war upon the United States, and that England guaranteed Cuba to Spain, upon condition that the -s arc to be emancipated. Washington Affairs. . Washington, June 17. It is confidently asserted this afternoon, that the Hon. Robert J. Walker has accepted the appointment of Commissioner to China An unusual amdunt of sickness prevails at Alexan dria, and it is reported that several ’decided cases of Asiatic Cholera hare occurred. M imster to China. Washington, June 18, It is reported that Senator Thompson, of New Jer- j sey, has been tendered the mission to China. The President, it id said, sympathises with the Chinese Re- i bds, and will not permit American intervention to bus* tain the Government of that country. The Liquor Law in New Hampshire. Concord, Jnne 15. j In the House this morning anew liquor bill was introduced, and referred to a committee of five Demo- j crats. A majority of the committee are said to be in favor of the law. Rumored Loss of the Macedonia. New York, Juue 17.—1 tis rumored that the frig- ’ ate Macedonia has been lost at the Canary Islands. The Insurrection at New Orleans. The reported insurrection at New Orleans turns out, j as we suspected at first, a humbug. However, such j affairs may be possible, and much damage may tempo- I tardy ensue from the loss of life and property ; hence, the prompt action of the New Orleans authorities is commendable. He immediately armed himself with sword, pistol and rifle, and his captors were obliged to shoot him with shot be fore they could take him. He was captured and lodged iu the Poughkeepsie jail. The eauso ut this inhuman butchery is unknown. It is said that he always appeared fond of his fanii .V- He had before been arrested on a charge or attempting to shoot his brother-in-law, but was acquitted. “THE UNION OF THE STATES AND THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE STATES.*’ COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 22, 1853. Another Brutal Murder in New York. —Much excitement has been created in New’ York by the discovery of the body of a young woman named Mary Ann McEiroy, in one of the docks at Williamsburg. She had evidently been viola ted and then murdered. She was an inmate in the family of C. H. Clayton, Esq., who offers a rew’ard of &500 for information touching this horrible affair, and the City Councils 81,000 more. Liquor and Crime. —Judge Starnes, of the Middle Circuit, in his Statistics to Gov. Cobb, concludes as follows: “in every 100 cases tried, of all kinds, there have been 33.33 cases with which the evidence connected the use of ardent spirits as a cause ; or just one-third. In every 100 cases of crime against the person, there have been 46.16 cases with which the evidence connected the use of spirituous liquors as the cause, by which it ap pears that nearly one-half of the crimes against the person are more or less attributable to spirituous liquors. ’’ Sale of Mount Vernon. —A dispatch from Washington says that the Mount Vernon estate has been sold, conditionally that it shall be of fered to Congress next session. Should Con gress purchase it, this sale will be void. This is from the memorandum of an agreement be tween Washington and John Linton, attorneys for a New Orleans and New York company.— The amount of purchase money has not trans pired ; 8*200,000 was offered and declined. Three dollar gold pieces are being issued front the Philadelphia mint. Commmial. Savannah, June 21. Cotton —There were no sales of Cottou yesterday. New Orleans, June 18. Cotton —The receipts at this port sinee Ist Sep tember, (exclusive of the arrivals from Mobile, Flori da and Texas.) are 1.591,900 bub s, against 1,372,265 I ales same date last year ; and the increase iu the re ceipts at all the ports, up to the latest dates, as compa red with lart year, is 210,959 bales. In the exports from the United Stiles to foreign countries, as compa red with the same date last year, there is an increase of 30,280 bales to Great Britain, 6,309 to France, and 2,010 to other foreign ports. We quote Middling 9 3-4 a 10; Good Middling II a 11 1-4 ; Middling Pair it i-z a 21 a--* , Fn 12 14 cents. Exchange.— —The market for the past week has been but poorly supplied with biils on England. Sight drafts are also sold with some difficulty, except at low figures. The market closes flat. We quote Sterling 9 a 9 3-4 per cent. prem. with a sow sales as high as 10 per cent. prem. Francs 512 1-2 a 5 15 per dollar. New York and Boston, sixty days, 1 1-2 a 1 3-4 per cent, discount. Sight, 1-8 a 1-4 percent, din. Freights. —There has been considerable activity in the Foreign Freight market since our last review, ves sels having been taken up about as last as they arrive. We notice seven American and British ships takeu for Liverpool at a l-2d. for Cotton, and 375. 6d. for To bacco. New York, June 19. Cotton —On Saturday a large business was done in the cotton market, but at lower prices.
