Gold in Abundance Washed from a
Deserted Mine in North Carolina.
Near Concord, Cabarrus county, N.
C., Robert Paul bought a gold mine
vtiiich years ago was parttally opened
by an Englishman, at whose death
work was stopped. The mine tilled
wnh water, and a large mound of
earth taken irom it. became covered
with vines. This week Paul hauled
some of the earth Irom near tne
mouth ot the mine to his house.
Among the gravel was a lump of
gold. He took tne earth to the creek,
washed it, and got $325 trom a cart
load. He kept the affair secret, i'nere
are 2,IKK) bushels of eartn at the
mouth of the pit, and a man uamid
Ed Hinson made Paul a casti otier of
SSO per bushel for it, which was re
tused.
It is stated by a man 90 years old
that the mine was really wonted by
the Englishman in a mysterious way,
and with wonderful success. It was
iu Cabarrus county that gold was first
found in North Carolina. Ifhe nug
get weighed twemy-eignt pounds,
and fur many years remained the
largest on record, until surpassed by
.one found in Otiiforuia. and later by
