ARRIVAL OP THE NAUTILUS
Hit steamship Nautilus, with later dates from the Rio
ir. ndo, has arrived at New Orleans.
tien. Wool, late Commander of the Mexican fortes in
Matamoras, is a passenger on the Nautilus. It. is his in
tention to join Sapta Anna. The plan of Monterey has
been proclaimed at San Luis Potosi. A party of Govern
• nent troops have been defeated by the Federal troops near
Reynosa. A number of the troops were killed. Gen.
Castro is in command of Matamuras, and, it is would
pronounce in favor of the Federalists.
Revival of an Old 1 rick. —An “exiled Hungarian
Count,’’ who was recently lionized at the Montgomery
“White Sulphur Springs, in Virginia, and who created ft
tremendous sensation among the unmarried ladies, turn** j

Kansu*. — A crisis is approaching in Kansas. The reg
ular correspondent of the St. Louis Republican writes
thus:—“The canvass from this time untii election day j
will be exciting. Almost every one expects a fight, and
many are preparing for it. The Free soilers are talking i
loudly, the Pro-slavery men are working silently.”
The Fall Trade.—hiding from the appearance of the
principal business streets during the last few days (says
the New York .Journal of Commerce,; the sales of dry
goods and other inereandize must bo enormous. The
♦all trade seems to be fairly under way. YVe know of one
firm whose sales, for several consecutive days, have ranged
from $25,000 to 80,000 per day.
Public Meeting.
There will be a Public Meeting'at the Upatoia Court
Grouncfon Saturday, the 22d inst. There wilt be a free

stales to day of 2,700 bales.

Cotton’ is a frifie lower and quiet, and 1000 bales chang
ed hands Middling Uplands was quoted at lOic. Flour
J3 active at $8 lor State brands, and $8,621 for Southern
per bbl. Wheat is firm and active, and Southern White
commands from $1.95 cdb $2.04, and Red $l9O per bushel.
Corn is firm. Crude Turpentine is steady at from $3.50 (and)
3.17 per 280 lbs. Freights for Cotton to Liverpool ruled at
5'16d., for Flour iront 2s. (and) 2s. 3d. and for Grain at Bd.
Freights for Cotton to Havre ruled at ic., for Flour at 50c.
and Grain at 10e.
OBITUARY.
We are again called to standby the “rave of another
and dear hiend,„who died in this city on Sunday, the 16th
mst. Wms. Fort Scott is no more!
(t pains us to know that he is dead. We have known
him from a boy, and we have known no evil of him. l r
pains us because lie was so good, so true, so proinisingjanu
yet, notwithstanding Ins goodness of heart, his purity of
intention, his brightness of intellect, he must fan by the
destroyer’s hand ere he reached his 20th year.
We cannot at once reconcile ourselves to this bereave
ment. Just fitted for admi. ion to the Bar as a practicing
Attorney, with a mind clear and strong, he would have
been an ornament to the profession, he must hare risen
rapidly, and success would have as certainly crowned his
efforts as that he had lived to enter the great arena ot hu
man iilc. lie never received an idea eontusedly, he caught
it at once and distinctly, ills mind was well disciplined
and he was a ripe scholar. He had thoroughly mastered
all the law books necessary to commence the practice. He
never readjiuw simply for admission, but to understand it,
and be prepared to go forward with ability when lie was
admitted.
But to what end was all his labor? lie lias passed away !
and wilt be seen on eaith no mom forever lie met his j
death as becomes a man. He bad been raised to iear God >
mid keep his commandments; Iris parents taught him a re
ligtbn ot principle, lotuuled upon the Bible, and he livgd
up to it, and let him have died when and where he might,
lie could at once have set iiis house in order that he might
die; .Tod ibis he did, for he expressed his lull confidence in
a happy immortality beyond the grave.
Our grid sinks into insignificance when we remember
the great affliction and the heavy blow it is upon tiiat ag
ed mc.ther, who has been called to stand by the graves of
lour sons, who have died between the ages of 19 and 25 ,
years. We know nothing that enables her to bear up un>
der these dispensations of Providence, but that Divine
Giace which she possesses m so high a degree.

The deceased, though comparatively youug, lias teen

has left ample testimony that she was well prepared lor that
account. Although a woman of superior attainments and
charms, and subject,doubtless,in a great ‘ degree, in early
life, to the adulations ot a flattering and “deceitful world,

the performance ot those matters, which were considered
with Mary, by our blessed Saviour, “the better part which

sistent member ot the M. L Church; and in her last hour,
