SOME REMLNESCHNSES.
Mr. Editor:—l have never lost
my interest in farming since ti e
days of “auld lang syne,” when I
pulled the bell cord over “Dock
ieV’ back. And I reckon I never
will. To me there is nothing
more beautilu! ban the r rustling
corn and the waving grain. When
the Binel) of the now turned soil
is in the air I get reminescent.
Old dav9 and happy days come
thronging back into memory.
The farmer thinks he has a hard
thankless toil. But let a
man forsake farming and go into
some other field of labor. He will
find then that he belongs do some
body else. The tree*t man in
the world is the farmer who owns
his own farm and stays out of
debt.
I didn’t use to think so. Now
I know it. And the farmer gets
an occasional rest. Saturday eve
ning has found for me a peculiar
charm when I recollect the
ure of other days when we could
knock off work Saturday after
noon. What boy or man who
has enjoyed the pleasure of a dip
in Martin’s wash !hole |on Satur
day afternoon will forget it.
There were the swimming match
es, the luxuriant rolling on sand
bars, the climbing up in the old
oak where in Jseason the musca
dine nourished. What whooping
and hallooing. Sometimes I yet
yearn for a dip in the bend of the
river. ‘'And there were giants in
those days.” J:m Martin, the
mighty swimmer, Dave Carl an,
the high divir, and the boy
whoso name I havejforgotteu that
could dive clear acrosß the river.
Then a lot ot the smaller fry who
played in the shallow water like
a school of tniuuows. And there
was also the Saturday picnic.(Mr.

’The'rich ’ man' cannot afford to do

They are made in many to'

There are as many virtues as there

over in that country ?■) There the
“brassy” swam was in his glory.
He courted all the girl* and was
the envy of his more bashful
brother, who yearned toward the
maiden fair, but didn’t have the
courage of the man of glibber
tongue. And when the noon hour
came the elegant and ample re
past was spread under the spread
ing ouk and all were invited to
partake,)
“Where Jthe carcuss is there
will the eagles be gathered to
gether.” They came from afar.
I need not name them. The “pro
fessional” picnicker was there.
The man who considered it a
heinous offense to miss even one.
And the joker too was on baud.
He who amused himself and oth
ers by his chaff. And the beau
gallant who seemed to think that
the ladies would starve, except
for he.
Bless me! lean hear now tin
roar of the water over Burns mill
dam, an l catch the oJ >r of
the honey suckle in the air.
Happy is the man who can look
back on no worse dissipation than
wash holes, baseball and picnics.
Mr. Editor, I don’t ku ow wheth
er they are going to ask us to
come over to New Salem and He

who cares. A man don’t have to
have an invitation to go Lome. So
whether I get an invitation or
not I am coming if I can get off,
and I’ll be bound there is not a
man in all that couutry but that
will let me come in and give me a
royul welcome as in days of vore.
