And Still it Grows Last week we made mention of the large and constantly iimreua ing business of Commorce. calling attention to the fact that on Monday morning then \vi re 17 solid car loads of freight at Lula cii route to Commerce. Possibly some who read the article thought timt it wus mere boas.mg but such was not the case. It wus a fact. But on M unlay of this week even that record was broken. Last Monday morning when the train was made up it was found that there were* 18 solid cars of freight lor this place. So far as we knew, this is a record breaker. As was intimated last week it is a matter of“roal pleasure to note that the volume of business of Commerce grows larger every year There are some reasons for this state of affairs which deserve no tice. Commerce is fortunately sit uated. She is backed by one of the best agricultural sections of the state. There are no better farming lands than can be found in the territory contiguous to C mmerce. Our trade conies from Banks, Franklin, Madison and Jackson counties, and the fa’rm lands embraced in the terri tory from which our trade cornea are among the best in the slate. Then too the farmers m Jthis ter ritory are among the best to be found . anywhere. While they have not yet reached perfection it is a fact that must be admitted by all who are at all familiar with the conditions, that the farmers in this section have made rapid progress within the last few years They own better stock, live in better homes, use modern ma chinery, adopt Jthe best methods of preparation and cultivation, and are up to date in very many respects. And still another fact needs to he mentioned. Com merce Las more money possibly, than any town of its sizes in the state. 0r tbre banks are able, and aecomaiodatiug, To have such bank* is not only a conven ience, r but a blessing to auy com munity. Added to this, is the faol that possibly m U o town of it* *iae, are to ba found so many many merchants of sue’; stroi g (inanancial backing, as ,ve have in Commerce. Only tins week wh publish notice of a formation of anew firm capiliozed with * 10,000 every dollar of winch lias actually beoii p rid in. i’here are several others with as much, and others who have more. This en ables our merchants to pay spot cash and hence they get .-> item at rock bottom prices. And dill another fact as to our Ouuikh men is rather remarkable. Tie men composing the leudi ig fi-„n here are all men in middle life, full of energy, and of ifiinowl edged business ability. Not only so, but their business ni ■' !m i , art, commendable. They fight shy of the sensational—steer clear ot futures—avoid all gambling feat ures ot anvikind wliatso • r, and conduct their business on sound business principles. II nee, we have comparatively no business failures in Commerce. And what is more, and even better than u ;|. our leading business m< a are of high moral character, and un questionable veracity. In s (ior j Commerce is f, unded on a ro ’ and hence her present is s.itisf torv, and her future full of pi,...... ise. Di<. H.ARLMAN TO SPEAK. " Dr. L. G. Hardman will speak to the Sunday school at the First Baptist church next Sunday morning on longevity. At eleven o’clock, he sneaks at the First Methodist church on the e-ffects of strong drink.
