LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Is Commerce A Harper Valley PTA?
Editor:
After reading The Commerce
News dated 10/31/07, the old
country tune, "Harper Valley
PTA," came to mind. For those
too young to remember, it was
a popular song in the late six
ties. The premise of the song
dealt with a young widowed
mother, Mrs. Johnson, whom
the local PTA thought did not
live up to their expectations
as a mother.
The young mother attend
ed the PTA meeting and
began to expose the unsa
vory aspects of her accusers'
behavior which, needless to
say, exposed the hypocrisy of
the situation.
For those who prefer a bib
lical analogy, remember the
woman whose accusers want
ed to stone her for her sin?
The words of Jesus spoke vol
umes: "He that is without sin
among you, let him first cast
a stone at her." (John 8:7,
KJV). Of course, her accusers
quickly dispersed.
Getting directly to the
point, the personal attacks on
individuals in our commu
nity, whether candidates in
the recent election or not, are
superfluous. Are the attacks
prompted out of fear or a bla
tant disregard to look inward
at our own fragilities? I don't
think anyone would want var
ious personal incidents in our
lives exposed in print or, for
that matter, even discussed.
Whatever happened to stick
ing to the governmental issues
that have an effect on all of us
that can be debated if neces
sary.
For a city that touts the
slogan "A city on the right
track," it appears to have
veered off of the "right track"
in regards to the defamatory
printed remarks leading up to
the election.
After all has been said and
done, no need to worry; it
appears the "good ole boy"
system is still intact, at least
for now.

‘Furious' At Amount Of Her Tax Bill
Editor:
I received our tax bill for
Jackson County. I was furi
ous. Last year the tax on the
family land was $1,671.67.
This year it has sky rocketed
to $3,530.80. There are seven
siblings to share 20 acres of
land. Do the division; less
than three acres each.
I have been told that single
family homes cannot be built
any more on small lots, but
our great county has made
it very easy for developers
to build divisions of houses
on lots as small as 1/4 acre.
What is this county trying to
do to its citizens? Who owns
Jackson County?
I now know why we started
getting "I want to buy your
land" cards in the mail. We
are not interested in selling.
But it looks like this county
has sold out to all the big
dollar conglomerates. Who
owns this county? You know
this is wrong. It seems to me
like the county is helping
these developers all they can.
Tax breaks are given to big
developers or businesses but
when it is their time to start
paying, they usually shut
down or find another way
out. Then the citizens' taxes
go up again and again.
We, the people, have put
the leaders where they are in
the decision making for this
county and this is how they
treat us. It seems like we are
being told if we do not have
big bucks they will make it
too hard for us to keep what
we have. Shame on you lead
ers of Jackson County!

IDA Considers Offers To
Buy, Sell Industrial Park Land
The Jackson County Industrial
Development Authority is con
sidering buying and selling lots
in its Central Jackson Industrial
Park in Jefferson.
The IDA tabled an offer from
Don Moore, to purchase 4.09
acres he’s owned in the park until
all members of the IDA could
be present. Only Chairman
Scott Martin and members Chas
Hardy and Jim Shaw were able
to attend last Friday’s meeting,
where attorney Daniel Haygood
relayed Moore’s offer to buy
back the land.
The owner — not related to
Jackson County’s State Court
solicitor by the same name — paid
$22,500 per acre for the tract. The
IDA offered $27,000 per acre to
get it back, and Moore countered
with an offer of $30,000.
Following a six-minute closed
session, Martin announced that
the authority would defer action
on the request until a later meet
ing.
Bill Schaller, owner of Four
Seasons Independent Living
Center, expressed interest in
acquiring land in the same indus
trial park to start a warehouse
and storage business with Cory
Ledford.
Schaller told the authority he’s
developed similar businesses
in Florida. The company rents
inside and outside storage space
and rents and sells storage con
tainers.
Martin told Schaller that he’d
provide him with a copy of the
park’s covenants, which include
requirements for screening
outside storage facilities, and
advised him that land will sell for
$30,000 an acre.
Schaller expressed interest in a
couple of lots, including one con
taining a long-vacant building.
Three representatives of First
Industrial, a commercial devel
opment company, attended the
meeting. The company hopes to
acquire a site of 150-300 acres for
speculative development.
— Remembering International Paper Company
Cont. from Page 4A
of the CEOs mentioned in
the article collected books
about their own business
field. They seemed to think
that they were already com
petent in their own area, and
by becoming an expert in a
different field, they became
doubly-competent. Or, per-
haps they are simply intel
ligent people with a love of
learning.
I hope the old guy who cre
ated the International Paper
ad series is still alive and saw
this recent article. If so, I'm
sure it gave him a sense of
satisfaction — an "I told you
so" feeling. And it gives me
the encouragement to order
some more books for my own
modest library.
