Locals Honored At Young Farmers' Show
Left to right are Round Robin Showman win- Walker, sheep judge Caroline Black and swine
ner Amanda Stephens, beef judge Brandon judge Rachel Byers.
The Jackson County Young
Farmer Association recently
sponsored a new educational
livestock Showmanship event
for all of the Jackson County
FFA chapters and 4-H mem
bers.
Twenty-five students learned
skills that they could use when
showing their cattle, sheep, and
swine . The two-day event was
held at the Jackson County Live
stock Facilities Sept. 28-29. Stu
dents practiced and got personal
training on their showmanship
skills Friday evening.
The Showmanship Round Rob
in competition was held Saturday
and was split into species and
age brackets. One junior and two
senior champions were selected
in each of the livestock species;
each was awarded a $20 gift.
The Young Farmers sponsored
the event to encourage students
to practice their skills, become
more proficient in each of their
areas, and have a greater ap
preciation for the difficulties in
showing different species. This
was accomplished by having all
of the senior winners compete
against each other; by showing
cattle, sheep and swine.
Todd Shultz, Young Farmer
advisor, said, “This was a great
learning and community event
for all of the students and their
families. We hold many activi
ties for each of the species indi
vidually, however, because we do
not have a county fair students
miss out on coming together
as a group and promoting their
livestock projects in Jackson
County.”
In addition, the competition
promoted how true showmen
should present themselves. The
students presented their animals
in a professional manner; they
helped one another in working
with the different species, and
were congratulatory when the
competition was over.
The winners in each of the
species were: Cattle: Junior - Sa
mantha Allen; Senior - Brianna
Bryant and Jackson Fischer;
Sheep: Junior - Newt Gilman;
Senior - Amanda Stephens and
Sarah Whitaker; Swine: Junior -
Mercedes Lakhicharran; and Se
nior - Becky Shirley. The winner
of the Round Robin competition
was Amanda Stephens, who was
awarded $100 from the Jackson
County Young Farmer Associa
tion.

A local Christmas tree farm is
doing much more than providing
fresh, fragrant Christmas trees
for holiday enjoyment this year.
The 7 G’s Farm, Nicholson, is
part of a national effort, Trees for
Troops, which will provide more
than 15,000 real Christmas trees
to military families across the
United States and overseas.
Since 2005, Christmas tree
farmers and retailers have donat
ed their own trees for the Trees
for Troops program. The Christ
mas SPIRIT Foundation, the non
profit that implements Trees for
Troops, received many requests
from the public on how they
could help. This year, consum
ers will have the opportunity to
purchase a tree at the 7 G’s Farm
that will be delivered to a military
family in the United States. Con
sumers can come during Trees
for Troops weekend, Friday, Nov.
30, through Sunday, Dec. 2, to
purchase a tree for a military
family. The Christmas SPIRIT
Foundation also welcomes mon
etary donations.
“We are very excited to be a part
of this program,” said Greg Smith
of the 7 G’s Farm. “This is a great
way for consumers to become di
rectly involved with the Trees for
Troops program and allow more
military families to receive a tree
for this holiday season. Providing
memories at this time of year is
extremely important, especially

for families with loved ones serv
ing our country.”
Trees for Troops began in 2005
when FedEx, which donates the
shipping of the trees, and the
Christmas SPIRIT Foundation
provided 4,300 real Christmas
trees to military families at five
bases in the U.S . and overseas. In
2006, the program almost tripled
when FedEx and the Christmas
SPIRIT Foundation delivered
nearly 12,000 trees to military
families at 25 bases in 17 coun
tries. This year, the two organi
zations, with help of consumers
across the country, plan to de
liver 15,000 to 17,000 Christmas
trees to military families.
