Group Seeks Donations Of Gifts For 'Forgotten' Seniors At Christmas The “Be A Santa To A Senior” program served more than 600 senior citizens throughout Northeast Georgia last year. BOGART -- Now in its fourth year, a national program that has brightened the lives of hundreds of thousands of older adults with gifts and companionship is again being organized locally. The “Be a Santa to a Senior” program, sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care, provides presents to seniors who other wise might not be remembered this holiday season. “We see many older adults who have no one during this fes tive season and that makes for a very sad and lonely time,” said Joe Ward, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office in Bogart. “Whether they are in a nursing home or in their own homes, where more are choos ing to stay, it’s important to reach out those who are usually overlooked during this special time of the year.” The Bogart Home Instead Senior Care office, whose care givers provide non-medical home care and companionship to seniors in northeast Georgia, has partnered with the Athens Community Council on Aging and two Athens merchants for its fourth annual “Be a Santa to a Senior” program. Last year, area volunteers delivered 5,000 gifts to 600 seniors in Bogart and northeast Georgia. Ward hopes to serve even more older adults this holi day season. “Our goal is to deliver gifts and provide much-needed compan ionship to at least 1,000 seniors this year,” Ward said. “We hope that the community will sup port our efforts as a way of giving back to the older adults in our area who have given us so much.” Through Friday, Dec. 15, shop pers can select ornaments from the “Be a Santa to a Senior” trees at Hodgson’s Pharmacy, 1220 South Milledge Ave.; Georgia Square Mall, 3700 Atlanta Highway; and the Athens Community Council on Aging, 125 Hoyt St. Each ornament lists the first name of a senior in need, along with gift requests. They can then purchase items and return them unwrapped to Home Instead Senior Care, Hodgson’s Pharmacy or the Athens Community Council on Aging along with the orna ment. Home Instead Senior Care enlists community volun teers, including members of the Georgia Gym Dogs gymnastics team, to gather, wrap and deliv er the gifts. A wrapping party is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 12. Deliveries will take place Dec. 17. Anyone interested in wrapping and delivering gifts can contact Tanya Woods at (706) 613-2224. Additional infor mation can also be found at www.beasantatoasenior.com. Businesses, churches and other groups and organizations are encouraged to contact the local Home Instead Senior Care office about adopting groups of seniors. Last year, 196,500 seniors across North America received 312,500 gifts through this program, which has become the largest gift-giving project of its kind for older adults. In 2006, more than 21,000 vol unteers supported the program and 1,500 locations across North America hosted a tree.
