that will be parked on South Broad
and South Elm streets down to
Spencer Park as part of the sec
ond annual Hometown Holidays
Hot Rod and Antique Car Show,
also from noon to 3:00.
Call the DDA office at 706-335
2954 for information.
From 3:00 to 6:00 Saturday, a
“downtown loft tour and busi
ness open house” will be held.
This event will feature some of
the downtown’s recently restored
buildings and will focus on the
downtown living quarters that
are becoming more popular
each year. There is no admission
charge.
The final event will be a lumi
nary service sponsored by the
Jackson County Relay for Life.
It will be held at dark in Spencer
Park.
Sunday Events
The highlight of the weekend
will be Sunday, when the annu
al Christmas parade will march
through Commerce at 3:00 p.m.
with the theme, “Rockin’ Around
the Christmas Tree.”
Hasco Craver, who is organiz
ing the parade, reports that there
will be several bands, includ-
ing the Commerce High School
Marching Tiger Band, the East
Jackson Comprehensive High
School Marching Eagle Band,
and possibly the Banks County
High School Marching Leopard
Band. In addition, the Seed and
Feed Abominable Band, an
Atlanta-based band that provides
music and street theater through
out the southeast, will march in
the parade, as will the 80-member
East Jackson Comprehensive
High School ROTC unit.
Entries need to be at Commerce
High School by 2:00. Parade orga
nizers will direct entries to the
proper location from there.
Immediately following the
parade, there will be a free con
cert in Spencer Park at which the
Seed and Feed Abominable Band
(www.seedandfeed.org) will pro
vide holiday music. There are also
plans to offer refreshments.
“Once the parade passes you,
you need to make your way
to Spencer Park,” said Craver.
“You will thoroughly enjoy this
band. If you look at the size of
the venues where they perform
and the caliber of the venues,
that alone demonstrates their
popularity.”
— Rain Fills City Reservoir
Cont. from Page 1A
The lake fell to almost 10 inch
es below full pool in late sum
mer when the city was still at
level two as ordered by the state
but was selling water to Jackson
County (which was providing
water to Jefferson), Maysville and
Banks County. After virtually all
outside residential water usage
was eliminated when the EPD
ordered a level four response,
the lake slowly began to recover,
something city officials attribute
in part to the fact that there are at
least six springs in the lake.
In spite of the full reservoir,
like every other water supplier
in North Georgia, Commerce is
under a state mandate to reduce
water consumption by 10 per
cent from last winter’s average
usage. The city will soon seek
bids for the replacement of at
least 11 commodes and two uri
nals in city buildings with more
water-efficient units. In addition,
Bryan Harbin, director of water
and sewer operations, is sched
uling meetings with the city’s
25 largest water users to see if
there are ways they can reduce
consumption to help the city
avoid whatever penalties the
state imposes for failure to meet
the 10 percent reduction target.
The penalties have not been
announced, but water providers
have been warned that they will
be “substantial.”
