Ten to 12 teams are expected. “I like to start a season with a tough match,” Love said, refer ring to the Panther Invitational. “This one is not as tough. Te amwise, we could do better.” But it won’t be until the foot ball Tigers get into shape that the wrestling Tigers will hit their Start To Wre: stride. “I’m hoping we’ll be able to cross the line and go from being close to placing to placing,” Love said. “If that happens, we’ll have a pretty good team. A lot of them saw just how close they are to being pretty good. As we get in better shape, the guys will start seeing more success. They’ve started to realize they tling Season can wrestle with folks they may be couldn‘t have wrestled befo re.” That, said Love is a result of, well, more wrestling. Last year’s squad averaged 50-55 matches, significantly more than previous Tiger teams were able to get in, and over the summer, Love’s squad got in another 30 matches, plus practices. — Lady Tigers Lose A Tough One To Banks County Cont. from Page 1B with about 45 seconds left. Banks County came down, hit a shot to get the lead back with two and a half seconds left. “We got the ball in to Sewell, and she was able to advance the ball down court and shot from a little above the top of the key,” McCurley said. “It just rimmed out.” The coach said his team is not shooting well, a situation that “will make us depend on our defense more.” The Tigers played aggressively on offense, which put them at the foul line often. The bad news is that they made only 16 of 41 of those free throws. “We’ve still got a lot to do,” said McCurley in regard to his team’s progress. “We need some more scoring punch, particularly from our point players, but we rebounded very well. We’re real ly going to have to rely on our defense to win games.” First Game Offers Tigers Lots Of Room For Improvement The first game of the season shows new Tiger basketball coach Chad Bridges just where his team stands — and it can stand some improvement. The boys’ basketball team hopes to break into the win col umn this week after dropping its season opener last Friday night to Banks County, 48-34. The Tigers were scheduled to host Social Circle Tuesday night, but results of the game were not available by press time. They’ll travel to Athens Academy Thursday in a game moved up from Friday due to the Spartan football team play ing Saturday in the State Class A football semifinals at the Georgia dome, and the Tigers will return to Athens Saturday for a match-up with Athens Christian. Tipoff Thursday is scheduled for 6 p.m. — or as soon as the girls’ contest is over. There will be no junior varsity games Thursday. Bridges will be looking for some improvements after the first outing of the season. “We didn’t do a very good job executing,” Bridges explained. “We’ve got to get better at that. The good news is we’ve got lots of improvements we can make. We just didn’t play very well.” Two areas in particular the coach plans to stress are better patience and shot selection on offense and making smooth transitions when the other team switches defenses. “The biggest thing that will help is shot selection. We were not patient,” Bridges said. Drake Cash led the Tigers in scoring with 12. T Green added eight, and Cohen Cooke grabbed six rebounds.
