Its 25-team field makes it the big gest middle school tournament in the state, according to Coach Darryl Ellrott. The tournament featured an “A” or varsity bracket, and a “B” or junior varsity bracket. The Tigers placed 10th in the former, led by Chance McClure’s sec ond place finish at 147 pounds and Kristopher Hart’s fourth place finish at 100 pounds. Team scores were not kept for the “B” bracket. “There have only been a cou ple of times I’ve come away from a tournament as pleased as I was with these results,” said Ellrott. “This is an incred ible accomplishment for our program, considering that 60 The Commerce Middle School Tigers dropped a 32-30 decision to Athens Academy in overtime last Wednesday in their first game of the season. With 15 seconds left in the game and the Tigers down by two, Chase Klugh found Jonathan Leffew open under the basket. Leffew missed the shot, but grabbed the rebound and scored on the put-back to send the game into overtime at 29-29. “This was a very exciting bas ketball game to watch,” com mented Coach Adam Bagwell. The Commerce Middle School Lady Tigers suffered a 28-11 defeat at the hands of Athens Academy in the first game of the season last Wednesday. “I was proud of the girls’ effort,” said Coach Adam Bagwell. “They played hard but were unable to make shots. Lack of practice time hurt us. We will work hard on shooting fundamentals and percent of our roster are first- year wrestlers. “They have improved by leaps and bounds since the beginning of the season. We’ve taught them that Commerce can compete with anybody, and now they are beginning to believe it.” Medaling for the Tigers in the B-team brackets were Cody Nation, first at 115; Taylor Willoughby, second at 137; Garret Wilson, second at 120; Josh Swistak, third at 147; Jonathan Nichols, fourth at 105; Brian Whitfield, fourth at 147; and Jake Vaughn, fourth at 127. The Tigers were due to go to Clarke Central Tuesday night for a tri-match with Clarke United and Morgan County. The next match will be at Gilmer County High School, Ellijay, to compete in the Bobcat Duals. “I was extremely proud of the team’s effort and sportsman ship. This week in practice, we will focus on ball-handling fun damentals and defense.” Klugh led the offense with 17 points. Leissner Racks Up Honors From Softball Web Site East Jackson pitcher Hayley Leissner has been named the Softball Showcase 2007 Player of the Year www.softballshow- case.com. This is a national site dedi cated to promoting players to the next level by providing web space for player profiles. It is based out of Orange County, CA, a very competitive area for softball. Leissner recently signed her national letter of intent with Lander University in Greenwood, SC, and will attend on a full athletic scholarship. She has also been named to the GHSA All State 1st Team for class AA. Kaylin Canup was selected to the All-State second team as an infielder. Megan Lord and Lisa Minish were selected to the All-State honorable men tion team. All three are seniors on Coach Pam Canup’s team. Kaylin Canup batted .456 this season, with an on-base percentage of .527 and 18 sto len bases. For her career, she batted .399 and stole 81 bases. She played second base. Lord batted .321 and had a .396 on-base percentage this Coach Rob Brown’s junior var sity Commerce Tiger Basketball team started the 2007-08 season off on a positive note last Friday. They knocked off the Banks County JV Leopards 57-52. “I thought we played well for a first game,” Brown comment ed. “There are definitely some things we need to improve on, but it was a good win. We were able to get everyone a good amount of playing time and to find out exactly what each play er can do.” The Tigers came out of the chute hot, piling up a 12-3 first- period lead, then basically put the game out of reach with a strong second quarter to take year. For her career, the catch er (and sometimes pitcher) stole 70 bases and had a .412 on-base percentage. Minish, who is due to sign a scholarship today (We dnesday) to play softball for Brenau University, had a 16-5 record this year as a pitcher, struck out 113, walked only nine and had a .028 earned run average. She was just as outstanding at the plate, where she bat ted .481 and had an on-base percentage of .517 this year. For her career, she had a .357 batting average, a .394 on-base percentage and had 86 runs batted in. a 32-9 lead into the half. After three periods, the Tigers held a 44-18 advantage. Ten Tigers put points on the board. Brandon Romans led the scoring with 11 points, fol lowed by Channing Anderson and Anthony Norris with eight apiece. Travaris Glasper scored seven, Demetris Bonds added six, Paul Ford contributed five, Tylor Adams scored four, Tyler Gamble and Joseph Sanders added three apiece and Kentrell Williams scored two. The JV Tigers will try to improve to 2-0 Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Athens Christian School.
