They are students in Todd Animal Science Students Put Skills To Work Members of the East Jackson High School Animal Science Agricultural Class put classroom lessons into practice at Tommy Benton’s cattle operation. Todd Shultz’s class visited the farm Nov. 1 and allowed students to apply safety skills around large animals and vaccinating practices on live animals. Students first learned in the classroom impor tant skills about disease and para site prevention, figuring and fill ing correct dosage of medicines and its correct application. They also learned the importance of reading the medicine labels and using them correctly. Benton is the State Representative for Jackson County (District 31) in the Georgia House of Representatives. In addition, he is a Jackson County Young Farmer member and is a retired teacher. “He was very gracious in allow ing my students to participate in these hands on learning activi ties,” Shultz said. “Besides learn ing about livestock management practices, they also learned impor tant people skills that they can use throughout their lifetime.” Shultz’s Animal Science class is one of many Agriculture classes that use hands on learning with in their lessons. Besides teach ing Agriculture at East Jackson, Shultz is also the Jackson County Young Farmer Advisor. He works with and advises many members in the county on agriculture issues and practices.
