Effie Slocum
Effie Sue Slocum, 87, of
Commerce, died Friday,
December 7, 2007, at BJC Nursing
Home in Commerce.
She was born on July 17, 1920,
the daughter of the late Sherman
and Nan Byrum Phillips. She was
a homemaker and a member of
Beaverdam Baptist Church. Mrs.
Slocum was preceded in death by
her husband, Farris H. Slocum.
Survivors include a son, Henry
T. Slocum, Commerce; daugh
ter, Phyllis Dunn, Douglasville;
grandchildren, Shad Slocum,
Commerce, Allison Slocum,
Columbus, and William Dunn,
Douglasville; and nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, December 9, in the cha
pel of Little-Ward Funeral Home
with the Rev. Chad Payne offi
ciating. Burial was in Franklin
Memorial Gardens.

Prentice Rolls
Prentice Ander Rolls, 80, of
Commerce, died Wednesday,
December 5, 2007, at BJC Nursing
Home in Commerce.
Born in Glenville, he was the
son of the late Maggie Deloach
Rolls. Mr. Rolls was preceded in
death by his wife, Mary Patrick
Rolls.
Survivors include sons, Kenneth
Rolls, Commerce, David Rolls,
Wilma, Ala.; daughter, April Rolls,
Danielsville; and a brother, Lester
Rolls, Glenville.
Private memorial services will
be held later by the family.

W.C. Hitchcock
William Crawford Hitchcock,
92, of Ila, died Tuesday, December
4, 2007, following a long illness.
He was born on April 3, 1915,
the son of the late Guy and Lena
Sanders Hitchcock. He was a life
long resident of Madison County,
where he was a lifetime farmer. He
served on the Board of Directors
for Farm Bureau, was a member
of Madison County Cattleman’s
Association, and a former mem
ber of the Board of Education of
Ila High School. Mr. Hitchcock
was preceded in death by his
wife of 68 years, Nellie Freeman
Hitchcock; and sisters, Montie
Shelnut and Sally Echols.
Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, William and Nina
Hitchcock, Danielsville; daugh
ter and son-in-law, Mary Ruth
and Calvin Smith, Comer; sister,
Helen Fortson, Hull; grandchil
dren and spouses, Danny and
Patti Smith, Cordele, Renee and
Dave Moon, Commerce, April
and Stanley Watson, Danielsville;
great-grandchildren and spous
es, Mandy and Michelle Smith,
Kendall and Parker Moon, and
Adrianna Watson; and two step-
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, December 6, in the
chapel of Brown Funeral Home
with the Revs. Dayton Logan and
Larry Elliott officiating. Burial
was in the Danielsville Memorial
Gardens. Pallbearers were Danny
Smith, Dave Moon, Stanley
Watson, Wayne Collins, Jimmy
Bird and Tommy Williams.

Vernelle Hubbard
Vernelle Maney Hubbard, 65, of
Lula, died Monday, December 3,
2007, at her residence following
an extended illness.
Born in Banks County on July
20, 1942, she was the daughter of
the late Edgar and Vera Crumley
Maney. She was a member of
Rock Springs Baptist Church and
attended Cornelia C.H. Church.
She enjoyed spending her time
gardening and reading, accord
ing to loved ones. Mrs. Hubbard
was also preceded in death by a
sister, Joyce Lord.
Survivors include her husband,
David Hubbard, Lula; sons and
daughters-in-law, Eddie and Robin
Hubbard, Watkinsville, Cary and
Tina Hubbard, Gainesville; sisters
and brother-in-law, Brenda and
Harold Cash and Gwen Maney,
all of Homer; brother-in-law, Mike
Lord, Commerce; and four grand
children.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, December 5, in
the chapel of McGahee-Griffin
& Stewart Funeral Home with
the Revs. Ross Palmer and Tony
Royston officiating. Burial was
in Rock Springs Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Jeanette Simmons
Jeanette Simmons, 73, of Tucker,
died Saturday, December 8, 2007,
at her residence.
A Jackson County native, she
was the daughter of the late T.C.
and Myrtice Holman Emmett.
She was a retiree of BellSouth
Telecommunications. Mrs.
Simmons was preceded in death
by a sister, Ann Emmett; and
brother, Billy Emmett.
Survivors include daughters,
Marcia Holcomb, Snellville, and
Pattie Weaver, Cumming; son,
Marty Simmons, Carnesville;
grandchildren, ChrystalHolcomb,
Branden Holcomb, Mitchell
Weaver and Jessica Weaver.

Monday, December 10, in the
chapel of Carter Funeral Home
with the Rev. Mike Freeman
officiating. Burial was in Barrow
Memorial Gardens.

Benjamin Kellum
Benjamin Paul Kellum, 23, of
Jefferson, died Friday, December
7, 2007, at Emory Hospital.
He was the son of Ralph Gerald
and Bethe Crawford Kellum of
Jefferson, and Martin and Donna
Kesler of Nicholson. He was
a member of the Free Chapel
Worship Center and was a student
at Georgia Southern University.
Survivors in addition to his
parents, include brothers, Brett
Kellum, Monroe, Keith Kellum,
Covington, Chris Kellum, Tucker,
Blake Kellum, Jefferson, and Clay
Kesler, Nicholson; sisters, Marnie
Kellum Kiser, Morganton, N.C.,
and Charli Kesler, Nicholson.

The City of Commerce Planning Commission will
hold a public hearing on Monday, December 17,
2007 at 7:00 P.M., a week earlier than usually held
because of the Christmas Holidays, in the Commerce
Civic Center Peach Room, 110 State Street. The
purpose of the hearing is for 1) Dink Woods, 3260
Maysville Rd. rezoning for annexation, Map No.
034A, Parcel No. 004, Acreage 0.586 from HRC
(Highway Retail Commercial) in the county, to C-2 in
the city. 2) Ingles Markets, Inc., 220 Highway 334,
sign variance. 3) Tim White, corner of Ridgeway Road

Louise Sargent, 81, of Blairsville,

Gladys Armour Worley, 87,
of Gillsville, died Wednesday,
December 5, 2007, at Northeast
Georgia Medical Center.
She was born in Hall County,
the daughter of the late Hansel
and Beulah Leach Armour. She
was a member of Mt. Carmel
Baptist Church and was a home
maker. Mrs. Worley was preceded
in death by her husband, James
Worley, Sr.
Survivors include daughters, Jeri
Williams and Francis Hudgins,
both of Gainesville, and Joan
Kall, Gillsville; sons, Jolly Worley
and Michael Worley, Gillsville,
Ricky Worley, Danielsville, Philip

Elsie Simpson
Elsie Holland Simpson, 96,
of Mt. Airy, died Wednesday,
December 5, 2007, at a private
health care facility.
She was born on January 20,
1911, in Banks County, the daugh
ter of the late Walter and Della
Mae Greenway Holland. She was
a homemaker and a member of
Hazel Creek Baptist Church. She
was the last member of her imme
diate family, and was preceded in
death by her husband, Clarence
E. Simpson.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Betty S. Ledford, Mt. Airy;
sons, Glenn Simpson, Mableton,
Carl Simpson, Douglasville,
Neal Simpson, Mt. Airy, Jimmy
Simpson, Jacksonville, Fla.; 16
grandchildren; 19 great-grandchil
dren; four great-great-grandchil
dren; several step-grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, December 8, at Hazel
Creek Baptist Church with
the Revs. Billy Burrell, Luther
Williams and Gene Moore offi
ciating. Burial was in the church
cemetery.

Brenda Phillips
Brenda Lee (Dyer) Phillips,
48, of Talking Rock, died Friday,
November 30, 2007, at her resi
dence, following an extended ill
ness.
Born in Banks County, she was
the daughter of Nellie Castleberry
Dyer of Gainesville and the late
Frank Dyer. She was a member
of Pond Fork Baptist Church in
Talmo. Mrs. Phillips was preced
ed in death by a sister, Velvet
Dyer.
Survivors in addition to her
mother, include a daughter,
Christy Phillips, Orlando, Fla.;
son, Nathan Phillips, Commerce;
grandson, Zachary Phillips; grand
daughter, Nataleigh Phillips; sis
ters, Judy Martin, Talmo, Trudy
Hamby and Lisa Underwood,
both of Gainesville.

Fork Baptist Church with the Rev.

Jimmie Hill
Jimmie W. Hill, 66, of Maysville,
died Monday, December 10, 2007,
at the Gwinnett Medical Center
in Lawrenceville.
Born on May 11, 1941, in Rabun
County, he was
the son of the late
Bill and Stella Jane
Taylor Hill. He was a
maintenance engineer with Frito
Lay, and was a veteran, having
served in the United States Air
Force in Vietnam. He attended
New Haven Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Janie
Watkins Hill, Maysville; a son,
Jason Hill, New York; daughter,
Karen Day, Maysville; brothers,
Bobby Hill, Baldwin, and Gary
Hill, Buford; sister, Ann Yearwood
Ramey, Lakemont; a granddaugh
ter, Taylor Day, Maysville; and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held
Thursday, December 13, at 2
p.m., in the New Haven Baptist
Church in Commerce, with the
Revs. Terry Hagwood and Jerry
Smith, and Mr. William Hill offici
ating. The body will be placed in
New Haven Baptist Church at 1
p.m. to lie in state until the funeral
hour. Burial will be in Jackson
Memorial Gardens in Jefferson.
The family will receive friends at
Ivie Funeral Home in Commerce
after 2 p.m. Wednesday, December
12.

Ruby Peters
Ruby Ozburn Peters, 91, of
Colbert, died Friday, December
7, 2007, at Athens Health and
Rehabilitation in Athens.
She was born in Morgan County,
the daughter of the late Joel E.
and Virginia Jones Ozburn. She
attended Freedom Church of God
in Commerce, and was a member
of Centennial Baptist Church in
Rutledge. She was retired from
Palmer Stone Elementary School
in Oxford. Mrs. Peters was pre
ceded in death by a son, Allen
Peters; and brothers, Idus Ozburn
and Harold Ozburn.
She loved her family and
enjoyed sewing, reading, needle
point, and cross stitching, loved
ones stated.
Survivors include a daughter
and partner, Peggy Peters and
Raymie Martin, Colbert; sons and
daughters-in-law, Ransom and
Joyce Peters, Monroe, Donald
and Jean Peters, Gastonia, N.C.;
six grandchildren; five great
grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Monday, December 10, in the cha
pel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral
Home, Covington, with the Rev.
Tim Garrett officiating. Burial
was at Lawnwood Memorial Park
in Covington.
