Still Seek First Wins

Towns County handily defeat
ed both the Tigers and Lady Ti
gers Tuesday, Dec. 18, sending
them into the winter holidays
with identical 0-5 records.
Both teams will return to ac
tion Thursday, Jan. 3, hosting
Jefferson Middle School.
Boys’ Game
Coach Adam Bagwell’s Tigers
built an early lead against the
Baby Indians, only to see it melt
away in the third quarter before
falling by 11, 43-34.
They led 14-9 after one period
and 27-20 at the half, but the
Dragons outscored Commerce
14-5 in the crucial third period
to take a 34-32 lead into the fi
nal period, during which Com-
merce was unable to close the
g a P.
Chase Klugh led the Tiger of
fense with 17 points, and Jona
than Leffew added 11. Jonathan
Book scored four and Damian
Wood rounded out the scoring
with two.
Girls’ Game
The Lady Indians just blew
Commerce away from the open
ing possession, winning in a 61
14 runaway.
The Lady Tigers were down
18-9 after one period and
scored only five more points
the rest of the way as Towns led
32-9 at the half and 48-11 after
three periods.
Scoring for Commerce were
Danielle McCurry, eight; Drea
Mathis, three; Jessika Kyle,
two; and Katherine Sanders,
one.

The Hungry Program
A Jefferson business is a col
lection site for the Hunters for
the Hungry program, which
recently provided the mil
lionth meal to those in need
at the Community Concerns
Outreach Center in Atlanta.
Ground venison prepared
in the form of chili, lasagna
and burgers, donated and pro
cessed through the Georgia
Hunters for the Hungry pro
gram, has become a holiday
staple on the menu of Geor
gia’s food banks for the past
15 years.
Representatives from the
Georgia Department of Nat
ural Resources (DNR), the
Georgia State Association
of Food Banks, the Georgia
Wildlife Federation (GWF)
and the Georgia Department
of Agriculture (GDA) were on
hand to celebrate the millionth
meal milestone.
The Georgia Hunters for the
Hungry (GHFTH) program
begins each September at the
opening of deer season, offer
ing hunters across the state
an opportunity to donate low-
fat, low-cholesterol venison to
benefit those in need. Partici
pating processors collect and
prepare the highly nutritious
venison for statewide distribu
tion through the Georgia State
Association of Food Banks.

All hunters who donate a
deer during the collection
period will be entered into a
drawing for a deer rifle, spon
sored by the Georgia Wildlife
Federation.
Over the past 15 years,
participation has steadily in
creased, and since 1993 hunt
ers have donated more than
7,000 deer, totaling more than
200,000 pounds of ground
venison.

CMS Wrestlers Knock Off Oglethorpe, Apalachee
The Commerce Middle School
wrestling Tigers picked up a
pair of wins Tuesday night, Dec.
18. They enter the winter holi
days with wins over Oglethorpe
County, 68-17; and Apalachee
Middle School, 42-28.
Winning matches for the Ti
gers were Sam Lewis, Chance
McClure, Micah Eason, Holden
Nunn, Jonathan Nichols, Mor
gan Flint, Johnny MacAbee,
Thomas Sweeney, Anthony
Drake, Cain Neisler, Brian Whit
field, Jake Vaughn, Drew Whit
field, Greyson Cochrane, Josh
Swistak, Jamal Wilcher, Trea
Edwards, Cody Nation and Kris
topher Hart.
“The boys wrestled really
well and did a good job with
Oglethorpe and Apalachee and
ended up the way we hoped to
end up at the holidays,” Coach
Darryl Ellrott said. “I was par
ticularly pleased with our B-
team wrestlers. They wrestled
against Oglethorpe County and
most of them won. The A-team
wrestled against Apalachee,
and they did well too. It was
a good way to end before the
break.”
The next meet will be Satur
day, Jan. 5, when they host Jef
ferson, West Jackson and Banks
County middle schools in the
third annual Tiger Duals.
“This is our big tournament
at the middle school,” Ellrott
said. “It will be a true dual tour
nament. This is our third year.
In the past, it has just been a
round robin between those
four teams. It’ll be team vs.
team, just like a varsity match.
It’s going to be the climax of
our season, I think.”

a better effort against Dawson
County.
“I’m hoping we can do a better
job defensively than we did the
first time,” he said. “We didn’t
get after them defensively, and
they shot very well. Offensively,
we’ve got to handle their pres
sure better. We just played very
poorly that night.”
The other two teams are Social
Circle and Banks County, who
face off in the other contests
Friday night. Winners will meet
Saturday for the title.
