Susie Murray
Susie Ann Kitchens Murray,
61, of Baldwin, died Wednesday,
December 19, 2007, at her resi
dence, following an extended ill
ness.
Born in Jackson County on
September 16, 1946, she was
the daughter of Winnie Crump
Kitchens of Baldwin and the
late Fletcher Kitchens. She was
employed with Ethicon as a ship
ping clerk with 38 years of dedi
cated service and was a member
of Alto Congregational Holiness
Church. Mrs. Murray was preced
ed in death by a daughter, Beverly
Murray; son, Ansel Murray; and
brothers, Billy, Roger and Paul
Kitchens.
Survivors in addition to her
mother, include her husband,
Avery Murray Jr., Baldwin; sons
and daughters-in-law, Mike and
Tammy Murray, Cornelia, and
Jeff and Lynn Murray, Baldwin;
sister and brother-in-law, Polly
and Theron Ayers, Baldwin; six
grandchildren; and three great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Friday, December 21, at Alto
Congregational Holiness Church
with the Revs. Johnny Barrett and
Tim Beasley officiating. Burial
was in Yonah Memorial Gardens
with the Rev. Sanford Kimbrell
officiating.

Bessie Wade
Bessie D. Wade, 99, of Alto,
died Thursday, December 20,
2007, at her residence.
She was born on October
18, 1908, in Banks County, the
daughter of the late John and
Methie Aaron Davidson. She was
a member of Pine Grove Holiness
Church for 42 years and was
retired from J.D. Jewell’s with 22
years of service. Mrs. Wade was
preceded in death by her hus
band, George Washington Wade;
a son, Norman Tesco Wade; broth
ers, Reed, Floyd, Earl and Bob
Davidson; sisters, Blanch Wiley
and Octavia Hightower; and a
grandson, Ernie Keith Wade.
She was a loving mother and
homemaker, and loved church,
gardening, farming and visiting
with friends, according to loved
ones.
Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, Alonzo and
Jimmy Baugh Wade, Alto; sister-
in-law, Ida Bell Davidson, Trenton;
grandchildren, Johnny Wade,
Shirley Nix, Walter Wade, Robin
Smith; three grandchildren reared
in the home, Rocky Wade, Ricky
Wade and Susie Wade Davis; 15
great-grandchildren; and 14 great-
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, December 22, at
Whitfield Funeral Home with
the Revs. David Tilson, Lester
Haynes and Tony Royston offi
ciating. Burial was in the Wade
Family Cemetery.

ments.

Peggy Elrod
Peggy Nell Elrod, 71, of
Maysville, died Wednesday,
December 19, 2007.
She was born on August 2, 1936,
the daughter of the late Bud and
Dessie Cannon
Watson. She
was a home
maker. Mrs.
Elrod was pre
ceded in death
by her hus
band, Robert
“Herbie” Elrod;
and a daughter,
Kristi Elrod.
Survivors include daughters,
Patsy Bracy, Alpharetta, Lynn
Kelp, Maysville, and Ginger
Bradford, Homer; step-son, Larry
Elrod, Stone Mountain; sisters,
Dean Beatty and Betty Boyd,
both of Pendergrass; and four
grandchildren, Will and Alex
Bracy, Anne Langston and
Lindsey Bradford.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, December 22, at
Mountain Creek Baptist Church
with the Revs. Jeff Graham and
Larry Elrod officiating.
Memorial contributions may be
made to a trust fund in memory
of Peggy Elrod, Regions Bank, 4

Montie Bray
Montie Wilson Bray, 89, of
Athens, died Thursday, December
20, 2007, at Athens Regional
Medical Center in Athens.
Born in Oskaloosa, Ill., he
was the son of the late Montie
Monroe and Hallie Krutsinger
Bray. Early in life, he performed
as a concert violinist, was retired
from Uniroyal Tire as an accoun
tant, and was a member of
Temple Baptist Church, where
he served as a deacon. Mr. Bray
was preceded in death by his first
wife, Evelyn Bray; and siblings,
Doris Talbertt, Nate Bray, Wanda
Griffith and Darwin Bray.
Survivors include his wife, N ellie
Reed Bray; sons, Jim Bray, Shelby,
N.C., Randy Bray, Asheville, N.C.,
Allen Reed, Colbert; daughters,
Sharon Yen, Nicholson, Denise
Pojar, Bettendorf, Iowa; brother,
Harley Bray, Seattle, Wash.; sis
ters, Norma Jean Neuman, Akron,
Ohio, Frances Bray, Champaign,
Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, December 23, at Temple
Baptist Church with the Revs.
Paul Downey, Jim Bray and Randy
Bray officiating. Burial was at
Resthaven Cemetery. Pallbearers
were David Bray, Cassidy Bray,
Chad Wilkins, Jahn Yen, Marlon
Duncan and Walt Whitaker.

Laura Dean Borders, 68, of
Jefferson, died Sunday, December
16, 2007.
Survivors include daughters,

Mary Lanell (Frank Swinney,
Commerce); sister, Lillie Bell
Porter, Jefferson; special niece,
Clara Nell (Garrett Smith,
Commerce); devoted friend, Bob
Randolph, Jefferson; seven grand
children; six great-grandchildren;
and a host of loving family mem
bers.

20, in the chapel of Forestglen
Mortuary with the Rev. W.R.
Brown officiating

Jesse Mae Prater
Jesse Mae Gaskin Prater, 88,
of Joanna, S.C., died Saturday,
December 22, 2007.
She was a native of Whitmire,
S .C., and the daughter of the
late John T. and Jeanette Crocker
Gaskin. She was a retired medical
office manager and a member of
the Epworth United Methodist
Church in Joanne, S.C. Mrs. Prater
was preceded in death by her hus
band, Edmond Rudolph Prater;
and siblings, Naomi Gaskin Wier,
Evelyn Jeanette Gaskin Farmer
and John J. Gaskin.
Survivors include a son, Kent R.
Prater, Marietta; grandchildren,
Jessica Prater and Selena Prater;
and a niece, Rebecca Eddington,
Maysville .
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, December 26, at
the Epworth United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Dan
Smyth officiating. Burial was in
Rosemont Cemetery, Clinton,
S .C. Pallbearers were Scott
Corley, Sam Khair, Todd Farmer,
John Farmer and Chris Jones.

June Hoffman
June McDonald Hoffman, 70, of
Greensboro, N.C., died Saturday,
December 22, 2007, at Moses
Cone Hospital
following a
short but cou
rageous battle
with multiple
myeloma (can
cer).
She was born
in Commerce
on June 13,
1937, to the late James Luther
and Betty Martin McDonald.
She was a former Miss Northeast
Georgia beauty pageant winner
in 1958. She started her journey
with her loving husband “Med” on
November 22, 1959, and together
they shared many accomplish
ments. She was a homemak
er and a member of Alamance
Presbyterian Church. She was
an avid golfer and champion of
every club she became a member
of. She was a member of Forest
Oaks Country Club and was past
Ladies Club Champion. She
played in many tournaments and
was a member of clubs through
out North Carolina and Virginia,
including Lenior Country Club,
Lenior, N.C., Land Fall Country
Club, Wilmington, N.C. and
Caverns Country Club, Luray, Va.
The height of Mrs. Hoffman’s
golf career took place in 1986
when she won the Greensboro
City Tournament consisting of
five country clubs. June loved the
beach and traveled world wide
with her husband. She was a
devoted wife, mother and grand
mother and will be missed by
all who knew her, loved ones
stated.
Survivors include her husband,
Mayette E. “Med” Hoffman, Jr.,
Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter
and son-in-law, Kimberli H. and
Brian Bullard of Greensboro, N.C.;
son, James M. “Jim” Hoffman
of Hickory, N.C.; brother, Martin
L. McDonald, Georgia; grand
children, Kayleigh and Karleigh
Bullard, Jessica, Caitlyn, Emily
and Noah Hoffman.
A memorial service will be
held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday,
December 27, at Alamance
Presbyterian Church with the Rev.
Carl Parsons officiating. Burial
will be private.

Jeanette Brender a Brandis, 80,
of Oak Heritage Nursing Home,
died Sunday, December 23,
2007.
She was born in Indonesia
on October 3, 1927, and was a
housewife. She was Catholic faith
and was preceded in death by
Dominicus Brender a Brandis.
Survivors include sons, Nick
Brandis, Commerce, Gary
Brender a Brandis, Atwater, Calif.,
and Mike Brender a Brandis,
Marrysville, Calif.; two sisters;
eight grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Monday, December 24, in the
chapel of Little-Ward Funeral
Home. The body was cremated.

Paul Samuel Carter, 59, of
Commerce, died Thursday,
December 20, 2007, following a
brief illness.
He was the son of the late
Arthur Thomas and Mary Lou
Whiting Carter.

Ben Carter and Andy Carter,
both of Knoxville, Tenn.; a broth
er, James Jay Carter, Anderson,
S.C.; and sister, Helen Hudson,
Bishop; five grandchildren; and
four step-grandchildren.

chapel of Ivie Funeral Home.

by brothers, Rodney and Nathan
Cowart.
