Commerce Police Incidents
JCSO Arrests
You Know Your Marriage Is On The Rocks...
You know your marriage is on
the rocks when you’re Christmas
shopping with your husband and
he tells you to hurry up so he
can go have sex with his new
girlfriend.
According to a Commerce
police report, that was the begin
ning of a bad day for a 34-year-old
white female.
The woman told police that
while the two were shopping for
their kids at Wal-Mart, the man
was on the phone with his new
girlfriend, after which he told his
wife to hurry up so he could meet
the girlfriend for sex.
But as the woman was driving
them home and talking to her
sister on her cell phone, her hus
band, thinking she was talking to
a man, snatched the phone from
her, hitting her in the mouth in the
process, then backhanded her in
the mouth again.
The victim told police that she
stopped her vehicle on Mt. Olive
Road and told her husband to get
out. He did, she said, then walked
to the driver’s side of the vehicle,
and when she would not let him
get in, struck and broke the driver-
side mirror.
When the officer contacted the
man, the report said he admit
ted snatching and breaking the
cell phone but denied hitting his
wife.
2 Thefts On
Devonshire Drive
Thieves struck two locations on
Devonshire Drive on the same
night last week.
In the first case, the thief entered
a garage that had been left par
tially open for the family cats, and
removed a set of socket wrench
es, a rechargeable flashlight and
a can of gasoline mixed with two-
cycle oil. The thief also entered
an unlocked car in the garage and
stole two purses, which contained
the owner’s driver’s license, Social
Security card, two credit cards, a
check card and a checkbook.
In the other case, someone
entered an unlocked vehicle on
the same street and stole 80 coun
try music CDs valued at $1,200
and a vest worth $50.
Other Incidents
Other incidents requiring police
intervention include:
• theft of $35 worth of gasoline
pumped into “a small blue car”
which then drove out of the Flying
J auto plaza without payment.
•entering an auto at the park
ing lot of BJC Medical Center.
Someone attempted to steal the
stereo, but was unsuccessful. The
vehicle was not locked.
•report of a missing wife by
a Stark Street man who said
his wife has left him and their
5-month-old infant on two occa
sions recently, and would be gone
two or three days. The man said
that on one occasion she went to
Alabama to see a man she’d met
on the Internet.
• theft by taking at Haynes Auto
Parts, Harris Street, where some
one cut the fence on two occa
sions and stole five CD players
and a set of wheels and tires, the
total value of which was placed
at $625.
Commerce Police Arrests
Three Arrested For Entering Vehicle At Hospital
Three young Commerce men
face charges of entering an auto
after they allegedly entered an
unlocked pickup truck in the park
ing lot of BJC Medical Center last
week.
According to the police report,
a medical center employee saw
two males in a red pickup truck
and a third standing watch near
by. She circled the area, and when
the men figured out that she’d
spotted them, they immediately
left toward Hospital Road.
The responding officer found
two of the men, brought them
back and the employee provid
ed a positive identification, the
report said.
They were identified as Zeuntray
S. Cook, 19, 646 Ridgeway
Road; and Jonathan Ortiz, 17,
644 Ridgeway Road. The officer
found and arrested the third sus
pect, Raymond Ortiz-Rodriguez,
20, of 155 Westview Drive, later.
The owner of the truck, who
said it had been left unlocked,
told police that a checkbook may
have been taken.
Others arrested during the past
week include:
•Gregory Harold Beck, 40,1051
State Street, Commerce, speed
ing, giving false information,
obstruction of officers and war
rants from Forsyth and Jackson
counties. According to the inci
dent report, Beck, clocked doing
45 on Cherry Street, told police
he did not have his license on him.
When the name he gave police —
Gary Beck — checked out, the
officer was prepared to give Beck
a warning, but then he found
Beck’s driver’s license under the
front floor mat, at which time, the
report said, Beck ran. As the offi
cer gave chase, he reported that
someone yelled “get down” with
such authority that Beck went
prone on the pavement, allowing
the officer to catch and arrest
him. The unknown person was
“a concerned citizen,” the report
indicated.
•Maclin Demetrius Morris, 42,
935 Homer Road, Lot 41, driving
with a suspended license and vio
lation of the open container law.
•Tyrus D. Cornish, 30, 127 Pine
Avenue, Commerce, on a proba
tion violation warrant. He was
arrested by an officer who saw
him at his residence and knew he
had an outstanding warrant.
•Aaron Christopher Ward, 22,
144 Crestwood Circle, Commerce,
theft by shoplifting after he alleg
edly hid four parcels of meat in
his clothing at Quality Foods,
Maysville Road. Store personnel
detained him.
• Cortez Celis Porfirio, 23, 1495
Hwy. 29 North, Lot 67, Athens,
speeding and driving without a
license.
•Catherine Loretta King, 39,
349 McGinnis Chandler Road,
Commerce, criminal trespass and
public drunkenness after a man
came home and found King —
who he did not know — sitting on
his couch. When he asked her to
leave, she allegedly cursed him.
The report said she told the offi
cer that a minor child at the resi
dence let her in after she knocked
on the door and asked to use the
telephone.
•Joel Gregory Phelps, 25, 462
Waterworks Road, Commerce,
possession of a firearm by a
convicted felon, obstruction of
officers and discharge of a fire
arm in the city limits; and Jacob
Lance Phillips, 17, 106 Jodaco
Way, Stockbridge, obstruction
of officers and discharge of a
firearm in the city limits. The
arrest came after an officer who
was refueling his car at the city
fuel farm on Waterworks Road,
heard several shots fired in the
vicinity of Commerce Primary
School. Upon investigating, he
saw three males walk onto the
field behind the school, one of
them carrying what appeared
to be a shotgun. When the offi
cer exited his vehicle, all three
ran, the report said. The one
with the shotgun entered dense
woods, so the officer, not know
ing what might have happened,
summoned backup and took
off after the other two suspects,
who shortly thereafter gave up.
The officer recovered 14 shotgun
shells, six of them discharged,
and learned that the men had
been shooting at squirrels. The
two told the officer where the
third, Joel Phelps, would be, and
the officer arrested him at the
Waterworks Road location. The
two older suspects, the report
said, apologized, and the officer
lectured them about the example
they’d set for their younger broth
er, age 14. A criminal background
check revealed that Joel Phelps
had previous felony convictions
and had an outstanding warrant
for his arrest from Hall County,
the report said.
